Mr. Bear (Shakespeare's nick name) loves to pull faces. He's a happy, social sort to begin with but part of his charm is to pull up his top lip and flash a big smile at the slightest thing that amuses him. He also loves to have his face massaged and to lick your hand. He's just so happy to be around people and other horses -- he wants to be everyone's friend. I understand that Hanoverians are generally a happy breed. Do your hanos exhibit traits that demonstrate this?

The last couple of rides I have really felt Bear's power as we work our way to the next level of our training. Such an indescribable feeling when the pushing power comes through from behind and I am transported to another riding dimension. And he's happy too because I'm finally learning to let go!!! I'm so happy!
My mare definitely loves personal attention, and she is very sweet. However, she is definitely a mare! Haha. She gets moody around other horses and she is very alpha female, especially around feeding time. She's never dangerous, but she has some attitude, which is why I think we fit so well together. She has the calm nature that Hanos are known for. She has a great head on her shoulders and is rarely ever shaken by anything. She can get a bit bossy but is a joy to jump and knows and loves her job. She has been very patient with me as I have learned to jump on her and she already new her job, so brinign up a newbie to jumping like myself was a painful experience for her I'm sure. I have learned a lot from her and we are starting to make a great team.

She does seem to have a sense of humor, as ever time I leave her unattended with the groom box the contents are inevitably spilled out all over the ground when I get back. Sometimes I still catch her kicking a brush around. Her favorite thing is to have her huge ears rubbed before and after each ride. It's a nice little treat for both of us. I would definitely look for another Hanoverian when I buy another horse. I couldn't have asked for a better horse.
My mare talks to me all the time. She hears my car and she starts talking. When I go toward the paddocks and whistle all my horses nicker. Scarlet is very affectionate. When I am bridling her she wraps around me for a hug. I will hang out with her and she will give me one lick on my hand. I have owned her since she was 4 months old and the more I know her the more awesome she becomes.
Linda I totally get what you're saying. I have never known a horse more affectionate than Bear. He's so sociable and wants to be everyone's friend ... even the barn dogs and cat benefit from his gentle brand of affection. I've had Bear since he was four years old and it's wonderful to have the satisfaction of knowing that his gentle personality is able to shine because he has always been well cared for, even before I took over ownership. He loves everyone, and it shows.
We are very lucky. I have 3 horses, but they are not all Hanoverians (TB & Dutch) and each and everyone of them has their own personalities. The one thing is for sure all my horses talk to me. I am so lucky they all nicker to me as a greeting, to let me know if there is a problem, if they want something etc. I have met people who say their horses never nicker to them. We must be doing something right!
