I have been sick for two weeks with who-knows-what! Probably a cold, but it has made it impossible to work AND ride! Work won out. Anyway, now that I'm feeling better, I ride like I'm a beginner again. OMG! It's like all muscle memory…

Wow, this is new territory for me. I am appalled that my body is not there when I demand the movements I took for granted in the past. It's just not acceptable!! ;) Now that the ranting is done, here are my new observations and revelations: I…

Sherry: Stretch back of calves on stairs (by standing on the edge and letting your heel stretch down and hold for 30 seconds). The 30 seconds part is really important. Drink more water! And eat a banana a day. If all else fails, try physio.

Is that fulltime Training Board of $2500 per month? Woah! I feel my coaching of $520/month (no board) is expensive. Worth every penny, but I feel quite indulgent to partake in 2 lessons per week. Totally different league, but I am always surprised…

I have often fantasized about having a farm in California. We have 8 acres north of Toronto, and the challenge and expense of having horses in this climate of 4-5 months of winter is overwhelming. I have always been a displaced Californian—I…

Hi, I just joined last week. I'm originally from Vancouver, and we moved to Toronto 29 (YIKES!) years ago—I STILL cannot get used to these winters. It's just not civilized! We are in the country with a small barn, but I have my horse…

Truth be known, I am officially on a budget. No buying any horse stuff for a year. I just have to stay away from tack shops. A couple years ago I went to Bahr's for a hoofpick and came out with a Schleese saddle (forgot the hoofpick). Whew!…

I LOVE riding boots! There are boots for every occasion! Showing, casual schooling, and hacking. Multiply that by two if you event or crosstrain. One needs a wide variety! THEN, what about colour??

Brenda: Do you seize up immediately afterward? That's how I imagine it would be. What about Yoga? .. even though it HURTS! I am a wimp, and don't want to get into a masochist yoga regime unless it really DOES WORK!!

I hear you, Debbie, re dressage pads. I love them! And there is nothing nicer than a fresh, clean pad on a dressage horse! FRESH+CLEAN=NEW No way around it!

Hi, I just joined, too. I'm 54 (coming 55!), and I ride my big Oldenburg mare 5 times a week. I used to jump when I was younger, but fell just one too many times! So now I ride dressage and LOVE it. Since I've found my passion discipline…

Hi! I saw your message in the over 50 forum. I am not in that group so I can't post there, but I thought that I'd share something that helps with my strength, posture and range of motion... pilates. There are even people who teach pilates specifically for riders, but any pilates class/lessons will help. It is difficult at first because you are using muscles that you don't always use, especially if you don't have impeccable posture (and who really does), but your body will adapt and you will be stronger, more flexible and have posture that will impress a dressage judge. ;) I found it great when getting back into riding after a long absence, and I now actually enjoy doing pilates for its own sake and not just as a tool to improve performance in other sports. Pilates classes are widely available, so you should be able to find a class/instructor in your area. A good instructor will work with your current abilities and needs.
