Equine Therapy Certifications: Which is Best?

Equine Therapy and Intra-Family Violence: Are there benefits?

Intra-Family violence can be one of the most challenging issues to treat in therapy. Much of the complexity results not only from the family’s likely mistrust of the system and the professionals that are a part of it -- particularly in cases where Child Protective Services may have already intervened -- but also, the prevalence of co-occurring disorders, such as addictions.Often, these family’s will minimize the extent of the violence, possibly target one family member as the “problem” or offer…See More

Equine Therapy: Humanity From A Horse

Horses have been domesticated for many years, and from the very beginning, it was us teaching them. We attached our ropes, harnesses, saddles, and ideas unto them, We taught them what to be, think, and do.And amazingly, they went along. Horses obliged us. When we asked them to carry us just where we wanted to go -- and sometimes in the most dangerous circumstances -- they did. After all, horses were the very first war vehicle. And when we asked them to carry us in the way we wanted to go, again,…See More

Equine Therapy on the T.V.

With America’s endless fascination with horse racing, and his own personal history with the sport, it’s no surprise that David Milch decided to introduce a new HBO series with horses right at the heart. Boasting such fame as Dustin Hoffman, Nick Nolte, Kevin Dunn, and even real life former jockey, Gary Stevens, “Luck” promises a thrilling ride. While many books, such as Seabiscuit, Ruffian, Wild Ride, and Secretariat have offered the public a glimpse into the inner workings of the thoroughbred…See More

Equine Therapy in the Medical World?

Malcolm Gladwell was the first to uncover the real truth about why patients sue their doctors. Opposite of what one may think, it has nothing to do with whether of not the doctor actually did something wrong. Instead, it has everything to do with whether or not the patient felt as thought the doctor did something wrong. And something wrong, according to the patient is not listening, not validating, and not expressing empathy for their concerns. What Gladwell was getting at was that when people…See More

Nice idea, claire, that doctors should learn some bedside manners from horses. Problem is the very doctors who need it most would be the last ones to line up for that type of therapy, and would be the last ones to listen to the horse, or even get…

A Bit About Me and my Horse(s)
CLAIRE DOROTIK, LMFT

Having spent a lifetime around horses – growing up riding and training horses and later riding at many of the country’s top show barns – Claire, in many ways, understood horses before she understood people.

Claire’s competitive accomplishments include top placings at the Almaden farms Mini Prix, the Michelob Classic Mini Prix, the Monterey Bay Mini Prix, a 2nd place finish out of 53 competitors in the High Jr/AO Jumpers at Thermal Desert Circuit, and a Reserve Championship in Baby Green Hunters Week Six at the Arizona Desert Circuit.

Turning to dressage four years ago, Claire has showed up through Prix St George with scores between 65 and 75%.

Because of the role horses have played in her life, and her education as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Claire has made a specialization of equine facilitated psychotherapy, developing an equine assisted psychotherapeutic approach that has proved highly effective in restoring emotional and physical balance to those who have battled trauma, abuse, and eating disorders. This approach has been utilized by many recovery centers including Creative Care Recovery in Malibu, CA, The Canyon Recovery Center in Malibu, CA, and other facilities that have come to recognize the unique way in which horses can facilitate powerful healing experiences for clients. She has written many articles for Horsetrader, Ride, and Flying Changes magazines on the subject of horses and horse training, and is also a contributing author to Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy: Straight Talk from the Horse’s Mouth, a continuing education course for psychotherapists currently offered by the Zur Institute in San Diego.

Claire is also the author of, ON THE BACK OF A HORSE: Harnessing the Healing Power of the Human-Equine Bond, now available on Amazon Kindle December 25th, 2010.
Claire specializing in creating great horses, and even better horse-human partnerships. For more information on Claire, or her upcoming books, please visit www.clairedorotik.com, or www.greathorsebooks.com.
