A Tragic End(Never say good-bye)

This isn't a blog post, technically. I wrote a short story and wish to share it. All honest opinions are desired and appreciated!

Please enjoy...............

If there's one thing my Aunt Teresa taught me, its that death is inevitable,no matter what you do to avoid it you can't. This is what angered me the most about being plagued by cancer. People get all weepy, run away relatives suddenly return and the medicine sucks. My Dad barely has dry eyes anymore and…

What is a Warmblood Horse?

For a while I always thought to get a Warmblood one crossed a hot-blooded horse with a cold-blooded horse. It made sense to me. Hot + Cold= Warm, so a hot-blooded…

And the Trainer Says…

And the Trainer Says…

I sent out the email to MerryLegs’ trainer.  I told her how I liked a horse that wasn’t lazy and unmotivated.  This was my biggest concern.  His owner made me think he wasn’t, but she didn’t actually ride him.  Mingo was a very quiet, sleepy horse, and he drove me crazy.  For many people, he would have been the perfect horse.  My older niece simply adored him.  They were the perfect pair from the very first ride, and I am so glad I had him so she could…

Working with Dante

Working with Dante

Each time I go out to the barn, if Ellen isn’t there, I spend a little time with Dante doing spring tuning.  We are just reviewing the things what he knows to prepare him for trail riding.  For the first week, we played bus stop.  He remembered the game quite well.  It is where I take him to the end of the driveway and we wait for cars to pass.  If he stands still, it click and treat him.

Dante remembered the game very well, and just loves…

Day 23?

Losing track of the days here!  Didn't get to work him yesterday.  I was just to exhausted from work, and hadn't seen my husband in a while due to our conflicting schedules, and me always being at work or the barn.  Today I got him out and we lounged some with side reins.  He wasn't exactly hot, but very anxious.  I am starting to connect when he does this goofy thing with his mouth.  He always opens his mouth and acts like his is smiling or chewing.  He does this when I put his bridle on,…

Bear or Horse-I'm Confused..

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman!! I never watched those movies(unless Krypto the super dog counts), too long, too boring and unlike Captain America, Superman is boring. But why discuss super heroes(Iron Man,…

Good News

Good News

Yes, this is good news. I finally got the results of the latest medical test, and it isn’t the C-word (and I don’t mean canter.) The problem is something very manageable, so that means life can go on. It is spring, and it is going to be a good one.

More good news—Kevin and I cross the river! Hurray! The first time was Friday night. Cole and Starry did great for their first trail ride of the year. They were both somewhat startled by a turkey running behind them, but…

Day 21 & 22

The days are getting busier and it gets harder for me to update this, but i am staying consistent with riding Mossberg.  Yesterday we stayed in te round pen part of the arena and rode after lounging with 2 other horses on the other side of the arena.  He was distracted but not crazy, and listened to my cues.  Working on more umph and forwardness.  I was afraid he would go up if I ever pressured him too much, but am learning he just throws a mini hissy fit and continues…

Every dog has its day and horses do to.. keep your chin up...

"Every horse has its day" ~ Jordan Kroll & Julie Fleming(lol)

I went to the stable hoping that despite the didisagreeable weather, I'd still have a good ride. Yeah. Right.

Before I delve into detail of my hectic…

3/19-20/15 Day 8 & 9

Day 8, Mossberg got out of his stall right before I was going to ride and ripped around the farm for about 15 minutes.  He was really fired up so I finally caught him and free lounged him until he started to calm down and focus.  After this, I brought him back out to groom and tack up.  After a little more lounging, I got on and we worked.  He did pretty well after all his shenanigans :)

Day 9 we lounged and did a lot of transitions of walk trot and some trot to canter.  The…

Waiting

Waiting

I waited and waited to hear from MerryLegs’ farrier, with no response.  I told MerryLegs’ owner, and she sent an email to him to check his spam.  A few more days went by and nothing.

In the meantime, my health problem got more complicated.  My health wasn’t any different, but the test that would let us know what was going on couldn’t be completed and my doctor wasn’t sure of the next step.  He wanted to consult with a colleague—who turned out to be out…

I Have A Dream

“Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so shall you become. Your vision is the promise of what you shall one day be; your ideal is the prophecy of what you shall at last unveil.” – James Allen

I want to be a DVM(Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) that specializes in equine and bovine mammals(that is, horses and cattle). My plan that I've had for a while, is the following: I'll shadow a…

The Thaw

The Thaw

It is so funny how something like just riding up and down a hill to a too-deep-to-cross river can be so satisfying in early spring and so unsatisfying later in the year.  The hill is thawed enough to ride on the whole thing.  The bottom is still icy/snowy, so we walked on that.  Once that thaws, we like to use that section to trot back and…

3/18/15 Day 7

Yesterday we had the day off becuase we had worked 6 days in a row.  We started our new week with lounging and what were supposed to be trot poles.   I lounged him with side reins, and he was pretty calm most of the way through.  I put two poles out, very far apart and he had no issues trotting up to and over them.  I put a third one in there where he would have to trot two poles in a row, and after a few laps of cantering and jumping them he finally got tired and trotted them all.   after…

Ride to your fullest and live big

. . . . . .So keep on climbing, though the ground might shake

Just keep on reaching though the limb might break

We’ve come this far, don’t you be scared now

Cause you can learn to fly on the way down........

There are times where I go to the stable not knowing what I'll be doing with Cody.  Will we be doing more work on the ground than…

Update on the Present

Update on the Present

This is the most frustrating time of the year. The weather has warmed up, the river has thawed (though it is still very high) and we can’t even get down the hill. Our trail has turned into ice from us walking on it so much this winter. Since it doesn’t get much sun, it takes a long time to melt.

It is now light enough to ride after work. Last week, when the trail was still snow, I did get to ride Cole a few days on the hill. He was very excited the first…

3/16/15 Day 6

Lounged WTC for a little while, then I mounted with no issuse other than the walking as soon as I get settled in.  We WTC, adn cantered a little longer this time.  He was very responsive, but his head was up high in the clouds today.  I took video of me riding, and I am bouncing all over the place.  This will probably improve with time as my muscles build back up.  He was very good though, and after the ride I turned him out with all his buddies for the day :)  He was a maniac in the field…

His Name is MerryLegs

His Name is MerryLegs

I anxiously awaited more photos. She promised to send me some over the weekend. Her farrier was coming out to trim, and she would get them, then. When the photos finally came, they weren’t the best. There were, what appeared to be frost spots on the pictures. She claimed it was 28 degrees below zero. Wow, her farrier must be a tough guy. Our farrier has cancelled on us when the temperatures were below zero. What does 28 below feel like? She said it had gotten as…

A canter is a cure for every evil~ Benjamin Disraeli

When your horse follows you without being asked, when he rubs his head on yours, and when you look at him and feel a tingle down your spine...you know you are loved.

John Lyons.

Truly, truly this is a true statement. The first time Cody ever followed me, without being asked, and rubbed my back and blew on my neck a…
