Started out the morning the same way and time.  Fed him some breakfast before pulling him out and tacking him up with a saddle and bridle.  We went to the round pen again to let him work out some energy and relax a little.  He finally came down to a slower controlled trot, yet still looking around at everything.  We cantered bother directions and when his canter became slightly slower I brought him to a trot like a reward for slowing down.  He seemed alright so I put on my helmet and strapped on the reins.  Every time I grab the reins and put my hand on his neck, he backs up.  I did this multiple times until he did not back up anymore.  I put my foot in the stirrup and climbed up, where he stood still while I mounted.  Once I got my other foot in the stirrup he started to get very anxious and jigging almost as if he were about to go up.  I also tensed up, as if I wasn’t nervous enough about riding this energetic 1,300 lbs. animal.  The barn owner came out at the time seeing both of us mentally freaking out and told me to keep his head bent in and walk in circles.  He had a lot of energy, and was very anxious, but he walked in tight circles for about 10 minutes while I listened to her talk me through it.  Her direction gave me something else to think about other than my panicking horse.  He finally calmed down and we were walking in larger circles, and changing directions.  She then had us pick up a trot and work in one circle with occasional stop and back up.  When he calmed down from that we began to trot figure 8s in the round pen and he had a lowered head and was licking his lips like he understood what we were doing.  We trotted in figure 8s for a while, and he was much more responsive to my reins and leg.  I felt a wave of relief and relaxed and actually enjoyed the ride.  We walked around for 5 minutes and called it a day.
