Call to Action: Nevada's mustang orphans

Dear Readers,

Nevada's wild horses are in danger NOW.

The Nevada Department of Agriculture has given orders to kill orphan mustangs even though these babies were being nursed back to health in the homes of wild horse "angels".

Several of these foals have already been seized. Their fate is, at best, uncertain.

We're doing what we can to keep attention focused on the NDA now, but you can help too, no matter where you live!

NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS: Next Wednesday, July 22, I will be part of a group which will carry petitions to Nevada's governor.

If you'd like to show Governor Gibbons that people all over the world consider wild horses a treasure, please click here http://www.thepetitionsite.com/4/speak-up-for-the-wild-horses to sign the petition and please ask your friends and family to do the same.

I'll speak up for you and the horses!

I am signing this petition and any more that suggest that wild horses should be removed and killed... who needs 2,000 more horses on the planet? Just leave them alone and you will never know that they are even there.. Ari, girl, you are right on ....

Unwanted mustangs? Who says they are unwanted? That is one of the points...they are wanted by many people. Some people enjoy nature as it was meant to be....with wild critters roaming free. If "people weren't so poorly managing the lands that the mustangs should be allowed to run free on much of this issue wouldn't exist. Someone please tell me if I've been wrongly informed but I've been told that much of the land has been rented/leased for 9 cents an acre to cattle ranchers. So then they put up fences to the areas that have water on them so their cattle can get to the water but the horses can't. This really seems to be a very complicated issue but it also seems like it should be a manageable situation if there wasn't so much greed playing part in all of it. Do the ranchers have the right to use this land for next to nothing so the horses can't survive in their natural habitat? Yes, the situation might need some human intervention, as we do with other wild animals, but I just don't believe there isn't better methods to handle this without shooting thousands of horses being held in the holding pens, or gathering them with helicopters and scaring and running some to death in the process and then once they've been gathered send them on to Canada or Mexico to be slaughtered. The haul itself is inhumane and then HOW THEY ARE KILLED is heartbreaking to anyone with a heart. I have watched several videos now that haunt me to think of any creature being put through the process. Some people don't want to watch cause it is just too horrible and I DO understand that feeling but it is sometimes the watching that causes people to really understand what is happening to these horses and motivate them to action to get it STOPPED! They aren't euthanized...they are slaughtered, a very grotesque way to die or be killed. Some people feel that with this poor economy we can't afford to help the mustangs and burros but if we don't help them NOW. it will soon be too late! From the statistics I've been hearing that are getting rid of them pretty fast and have been trying to make plans to get rid of lots more in the very near future. I know there are many people that do hope to see wild horses when they visit the western states, just as they see deer and mountain goats and all other kinds of critters....we need these animals in our world!

As well, another reply to Kevan - what about the population explosion of humans?!? You say, 'what does one do with 2,000 + extra horses each year?' Well, what does one do with an extra million people each year. No one is saying anything about limiting the human population on the planet, so what right do we have to say that the horses have to die to make room for the extra humans?

As a reply to TM Chandler and Kevan - Who ever said that humans own the earth?!? The wild horses have been on the planet far longer than humans - what right do we have to take their land, and now kill them mercilessly just for the reason that they are no longer 'convenient' for human use. I cannot believe the stupidity of the people who live in a world where humans own everything! Get it through your head that humans are just like every other animal on this planet. No one owns the planet, and every animal and has a right to live in peace.

They have suggested separation and sterilation instead of killing live horses, but I guess that is too logical of an idea. Listen, my trainer is a blm and nevada wild horse rescuer, just pissed off about the lack of ability to get anywhere with the blm... they want to run the horses off of a cliff.... so whatever..... if someone wants to have a mare sterilization progrma that they tried to initiate five years ago, then fine.. and they do have a plan. it is called adopt and rescue.... if they can't rescue out the horses individually then make a donation to the foundation that is trying to keep the horses and burros from being run off of a cliff.... don't let them be born for petsakes before we teach people that it's okay to seize their land, then kill them because they are inconvenient....

There is a lot more private money flowing into operations like this than federal funds right now, so if those writing the cheques want to save these foals, then they should have presented a viable plan for their ongoing welfare. All I read was a list of demands to the feds, but no real "solutions". What does one do with 2,000 + extra horses each year?

Don't get me wrong, I'm just as heartbtroken over these horses as anyone, but in the absence of a solid plan for their future, I fear they may see a fate similar to so many others. I've seen too much of this to kid myself. If you don't believe this can happen, come along with me on the SPCA seizure ... you won't have to wait long, there isn't a week go by that I don;t get to talk to my friends at the local shelter, or those around the province.
If euthanasia is an option, then it may be one that needs to be considered for at least part of the population. Who decides? I don't have an answer to that one.

Humane Death? I'd hardley call it that..... in any event, why should the mustangs be killed because of greedy land owners... let them be, let them run free..... I got my orphan mustang already... His name is Oliver... his herd is safe for now because they were rescued by private funds.....

I am not sure why our tax dollars should continue to fund the care of thousands of unwanted mustangs. People are unable to feed family and are having to give up pets and beloved horses just to survive in the current economy. A humane death is not a bad alternative.......
