Shirley is known as the "wild horse angel" for the animals she rescues. As far as humane euthanasia goes, most horses are slaughtered with machetes, captive bolts and throat slitting in factory settings. They are not put down with the $60 injection most of us would ask a vet to administer to a horse in misery.
The Bureau of Land Management's wild horse and burro program is in chaos. The Bureau says it is out of funds, and yet refused stimulus money. It claims wild horses are overpopulating the range, but it has "zeroed out" herd management areas which are their ancestral lands. The BLM continues to make gross expenditures on indpenedent contractors who charge millions for what volunteers want to do for free.
I am in the midst of this tumult -- in meetings and on the range -- and am happy to discuss the topic with you all.
