Essential Springtime Supplies for Horse Owners

Owning a horse in the springtime presents a unique set of challenges – you must be ready to deal with shedding season, mud, and a horse who may not have been in a regular riding program. Having the right supplies will help you to better cope with the challenges of spring. Are these supplies in your barn?

Clippers

With show season quickly approaching, now is the time to make sure that you have a quality set of clippers so that you can get your horse show-ring ready. If your clippers have been stored for a while, get them out and oil them up so that they will be ready to go when you need them. If you need a new set of clippers, now is the time to start shopping.

Shedding Blade

Shedding season is upon us, and the shedding blade is the most powerful tool out there for shedding (closely followed by the curry comb). If you don’t already have a shedding blade in your grooming kit, make sure to add one. You might also want to add an apron or pullover to your grooming kit that you wear only while shedding your horse out, to help keep the hair to a minimum.

Ointments

Scratches and other mud-related issues are more likely to occur in the spring. It’s a good idea to have ointments and possibly even fungal treatments on hand so that you can stay ahead of the game when it comes to your horse’s health.

Mane and Tail Conditioner

After the winter weather and spring mud, your horse’s tail may need some work. Having a good mane and tail conditioner in your grooming kit can help you to detangle your horse’s tail with minimal damage. Tip: Work conditioner into and through your horse’s tail with your hands, then let it sit for ten minutes. You will be better able to work the tangles out of your horse’s tail without breaking the hairs. And, of course, if your tail brush or comb gets stuck, always stop and work through the tangles by hand.

Tail Bag

If your pastures are particularly muddy and your horse’s tail is long, mud may be accumulating in his tail, resulting in tangles and breakage. Have a tail bag on hand so that you can tie up your horse’s tail if needed. Alternatively, learn how to tie a mud knot to keep your horse’s tail clean.

Thrush Treatment

With muddy and wet pastures often comes thrush. In addition to cleaning your horse’s hooves regularly, you may need a thrush treatment to clear up the condition. Be sure to add a thrush treatment to your grooming tote – a small bottle will last you a long time.

The right tools and supplies can make caring for your horse in springtime much easier. What springtime essentials are in your barn?
