If your wintertime bedding bills have left your wallet thin, don’t despair. There are plenty of ways to save on your bedding bill in the upcoming months.

Maximize Turnout

With warm weather finally here, it’s a great time to maximize the number of hours that your horse spends outside. If your barn has adequate pasture turnout, then consider leaving your horse out all the time, only bringing him inside for meals. The less that your horse uses his stall, the less bedding he will need.

Invest in Quality Manure Forks

If your current manure forks have broken or bent tines, then you’re probably throwing out more bedding than you need to be. Purchase a few quality manure forks so that you can easily do a thorough job of cleaning the stall without throwing out clean bedding.

Invest in Stall Mats

If your stall is not yet matted, invest in stall mats to make stall cleaning easier and more efficient. Stall mats help prevent a dirt base from getting worked into the bedding. Additionally, stall mats add cushion to the stall, reducing the amount of bedding that you will have to use.

When installing stall mats, be sure that they line up perfectly to prevent bedding and urine from working down between the mats. Ideally, purchase stall mats that interlock for a tight fit, such as the Loktuff stall mats offered by Classic Equine Equipment.

Use a Stable Comfort System

To truly save on bedding costs, consider installing the StableComfort System in your horse stalls. The StableComfort System is a wall-to-wall waterproof mattress system which consists of a 2.5” rubber crumb-filled mattress topped with a ¼” thick rubber impregnated top cover. The crumb-filled mattress provides excellent comfort and shock absorption so that you no longer need to rely on thick bedding to provide padding. When you use the StableComfort System, you only need to use bedding for absorption, dramatically reducing your bedding bill.

Buy Bedding in Bulk

You can generally buy items at a lower price when you buy them in bulk, and horse bedding is no exception. If possible, set up your barn so that you can store bulk orders of bedding. Adding on a separate bedding shed may be necessary, but the cost of building the shed can quickly pay for itself in terms of the money that you save when buying bulk bedding.

Your bedding bill doesn't have to deplete your wallet – there are a number of ways that you can save on your bedding costs.
