In response to Kim Schmittendorf's blog about Horse Husbands, my first response was, "Yes, I supported my wife after she spent nearly 40 years not riding, between the time she started university and the time I was able financially to support a horse plus lessons." However, some of us "Horse Husbands" have found ourselves, after not riding at all in the past 50++ years, falling head over heals in love with our 4 legged friends. My lovely mate could say she wants to drop the ponys altogether tomorrow, and I would have to say "Fine. I keep my gelding, my saddle, and my tack, and will continue to ride, train, and learn, whether or not you continue in the sport". In other words, THIS Horse Husband has been bitten by a HORSEFLY, or some other Horse bug, and is, like it or not, ADDICTED and HOOKED, to the equine animal, Hoof, Mane, and Halter. I've learned more about these animals in the past few months, not just the riding aspect, but the personalities and idiosyncrasies of the beasts, that I might as well be on heroin, the draw may be just that strong. The beauty of the horse, the magnificence,
and the natural beauty, of the horse, is totally addicting, if one choses to stop and absorb the aroma and feelings that they convey. HORSE HUSBAND? Don't think so. HORSE LOVER, YES! To all the "Horse Husbands" out there, Smell the coffee, and the hay and manure, and the breath of the animal, and see if you don't find yourself on a natural High. Can't let the Mrs. have all the fun.

Oh geez. And then you'll be in the locker, messing with my bridle, borrowing my spur straps right off my boots, washing the white saddle pads with the dark polo wraps, leaving the lid off the complete feed, losing my favourite goat-hair brush at some show, spending money on a new saddle so we're still watching TV on an old Commodore 64 monitor, never home for dinner because you're working on your coaching certification...

;)

Just kidding. Well only a little. :) Nothing like a dinner date with my husband where we can brainstorm a troubleshooting plan on flying changes -- and grey saddle pads are manageable. Congratulations on your horse-man-ship! :)

Good for you. Some of us just can't help it, we are born to be horse people (and you do not have to have horsemen in your pedigree either!)
May you have many wonderful years of riding and horsekeeping. There is nothing better in the world.
