As January hits, winter may be taking a toll on your blanketing morale. Are you tired of changing blankets and dealing with tears and rips? We’ve come up with some great tips to make blanketing easier for you.

Invest in Separate Sets of Blankets

If your horse is turned out during the winter but also spends time in his stall, then investing in separate sets of waterproof turnouts and stable blankets can help to prolong the life and effectiveness of your blankets. When a horse lies down in his stall, a waterproof blanket is exposed to the urine that has accumulated in the stall. Additionally, if a horse wears a single blanket continuously for both turnout and time in his stall, then the blanket can start to rub. Investing in a separate turnout wardrobe for your horse can mean that all of your blankets last longer, and your horse is more comfortable.

Buy Quality Blankets

When it comes time to buy winter blankets, buying a quality blanket can mean that the blanket will last you longer. While a more significant initial investment, going with a blanket that is made with tough, durable materials can pay off in the long run. Alternatively, keep an eye on end-of-the-season sales to see if you can get discounted quality blankets.

Use Heated Blanket Racks

If your blankets never seem to dry quickly enough, look into getting heated blanket racks to speed up the drying process. Storing wet blankets will result in mold and damage, so make sure that blankets are always dry before you put them away, and that you store blankets properly.

Keep Patches On Hand

Even with the highest quality blankets, rips and tears happen. Keep blanket patches on hand to make minor repairs fast and easy. If you have an old blanket that can no longer be used, cut off any hardware and keep the hardware on hand as a replacement in case you should ever need it.

Separate Blanket Troublemakers

Most of the damage to your horse’s blankets probably occurs while your horse is turned out. While it’s great to turn horses out in groups, some horses play rough, which can mean major damage for the blankets on the other horses in the herd. If there is a single horse who is particularly rough on blankets, then muzzling him may help. If blanket damage becomes persistent, then you may want to turn the horses out individually for the winter.

No one loves blanket season, but with a little planning and organization, you can make it a bit easier on yourself.
