OK, I hear you. Color me persuaded, if not convinced. The chance at riding in a Debbie McDonald clinic is one that should not be passed up. So I just went to the California Dressage Society website and handed over $65 for my 2010 membership dues.

The CDS regional amateur clinics are an interesting phenomenon. I don't know if other dressage associations around the USA offer something similar. In California, every year, each region (Northern, Central, and Southern...we have a huge state, what can I say?) organizes their clinic. The same clinician is featured in each region. Last year it was Jane Weatherwax. Did I mention it will be Debbie McDonald in 2010? (Sorry...even I'm getting a little tired of feeling like a star-struck teenager!) Anyway, each clinic includes an introductory session and three (count 'em, THREE) full days of clinic. Each rider is required to attend the introductory session and all three days of rides. So, not only do you learn on your own horse, but think of all the great stuff you pick up watching other riders of various levels.

Each region has their own organizer, and each chapter within the region is responsible for selecting the rider from their membership to attend the clinic. Individual ammies can submit applications, but priority goes to the chapters. With Debbie teaching, I would bet my next paycheck that there won't be any non-chapter slots available. So...I'll be submitting my application when the time comes to be my chapter's representative. The chapter will then hold a drawing from all the applications submitted by eligible riders (the chapter decides the eligibility requirements). I have no idea what, if any, special requirements my chapter has for eligibility, beyond chapter membership. Guess asking Meg tomorrow in my lesson is the first order of business.

So, stay tuned for more details in future posts. Now that I've committed (in my head, anyway) to applying for a spot, I am really excited and hopeful that Sammie and I will be picked to represent our chapter!

Thanks, Ferrous! Even if I don't get picked, I'll be attending as an auditor, so it's all good! :)

The Squirt and I will be keeping fingers (hooves?!) crossed that you will be chosen to represent your chapter. Good luck! :)
