Looking back, looking forward...

Today, little Maggie was in season. I knew it was coming, I rode Friday, I know the mare. She's been delightful lately, making great progress. But today was the worst day of her cycle. There's always one crap day, often I can avoid it, but, I thought it would be yesterday. So, 7 nervous poops before we even went into the arena, and I put her on the longe line. Did get on her for a bit, she was tense, but not bad.

So, my tendency is to look forward, where we need to be, what we need to accomplish. In this case, I think I'll look back. A couple years ago, Maggie was a squealing, bouncing, nutso on her bad day. I mean I used to ride her, but, we didn't get much done, to say the least.

Today, she was totally civilized. I mean spooky, as she gets when she's in season. But, she bravely went past the scary parts. No blowing up on the longe line. No blowing up under saddle. Tense, tight, inattentive, but nothing *bad*.

That's a LONG way from where she was. I think my little girl is growing up. She's just slow!

but also.... i rode at a local show grounds last sunday while they were setting up for a one day event. tractors moving huts, groups of people walking the course, other people dragging plastic dressage pipes near us.... she was a bit spooked but lovely and forward and ...... she had loose shoulders!!! oh bliss!!!! how i love loose shoulders! when they shift from the slightest aid! what a good girl!

Mares and shadows, I have no idea what they think they see!  Maggie, during the winter, has issues when the colour of the sand in the arena is different.  God forbid you harrow it!  And if you've been driving horses in the arena, the wheels make funny marks...  I hear ya Vickie, they are fun, no doubt!

at least you know what's causing it!!! i had a wild ride tonight. its' autumn. i have 3 lights on a 20x60 arena. so we have shadows. we try and ride by dusk so she's a bit used to it before the dark sets in. tonight--- there was a dog barking. sounded like next door. but delphi knows next door doesn't have a dog..... she's so clever!! i thought maybe a session of walking would be okay? got up to a bit of trot, a bit of canter, a few transitions..... quit on a good note. no hastles, no stess.  but it certainly could have been a whole lot better!!!!
