The Brook Hospital for Animals (BHA) is an international organization that offers free veterinary services to animals in need. In addition to treatment, it provides training and programs regarding animal health and well-being. The organization’s primary focus is in Africa, Asia and Latin American.

The BHA was founded 1934 by the wife of a British army major general named Dorothy Brooke following a trip to Egypt. She was horrified by the condition of the horses there. Many were cavalry horses that served during WWI for the British, Australian and American armies and later sold following the conclusion of the war. Brooke eventually returned to Britain where she raised enough money to buy 5000 animals and offer them veterinary care.

Today the hospital services over 700,000 animals annually (mostly horses, donkeys and mules) that suffer from over-work, illnesses, hunger and/or exhaustion. The BHA says the biggest issue facing the health of these animals is extreme poverty, cultural practices that may harm the animals and/or lack of knowledge and education regarding animal welfare. To assist in these issues, various permanent and mobile clinics are established throughout Egypt, Pakistan, Jordan, Israel, Nepal, India, Afghanistan, Palestine, Ethiopia, Guatemala and Kenya.

Right now, there is a lot of work to do and animals to help following the recent revolution in Egypt. To find out more information or to donate, visit the BHA website.
