A total of 60 horses were flown in from all over the world to compete at the Rolex FEI World Cup™ Finals to be held in Las Vegas (USA) from 15 to 19 April. The 35 European based Jumping and Dressage horses left from Liege airport in Belgium at 7h19am local time on Saturday 11 April and arrived without incident in Las Vegas at 8h55am local time after a direct flight that took 10 hours and 35 minutes. At the same time, airplanes from all over the world delivered their precious loads from the other World Cup Leagues.

The FEI World Cup™ Jumping Final at a Glance

The FEI World Cup™ Jumping has been the climax of the indoor season since 1979. The 2009 Final is the fifth FEI World Cup™ Jumping Final to be held in Las Vegas. The first final in the Thomas & Mack Centre in 2000 only featured show jumping.

Forty-six riders from 22 countries have confirmed their participation in the 2009 Rolex FEI World Cup™ Jumping Final. Twelve riders from the United States, six from Germany and three from Switzerland will compete in the Jumping final. The full list of participants is available here.

Mother and Son

For the first time in history a mare and her son will compete together in an FEI World Cup Final. American rider Michelle Spadone qualified with her mare Melisimo in the USA East Coast League. Before becoming a show jumper, Melisimo (by the 1994 World Cup winner Libero H) was a brood mare in The Netherlands. In 1998 she gave birth to Robin Hood W, who has qualified with Ben Maher from Great Britain. In order to produce Robin Hood W Dutch horse breeder Bennie Wezenberg chose multiple World Cup participant Animo as partner for his mare Melisimo.

Course Designer

American course designer Anthony d’Ambrosio will be assisted by Leopoldo Palacios from Venezuela.

Western European Leader Relies on Rookie

For the final in Las Vegas, Western European League winner Gerco Schröder has to rely on Eurocommerce Seattle, the least experienced of his three horses meeting the criteria for competing in the Final. “Eurocommerce Milano was not feeling very well, which showed in a blood analysis,” said the Dutch rider. “Eurocommerce Pennsylvania has not been competing for a couple of weeks, so that would not be a good idea. Eurocommerce Seattle has only done three World Cup qualifiers, this is his first big test. But he was second in the Championat in Dortmund, he gives me a very good feeling.”

Favorites

Once more title defender Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum is one of the big favourites. The American born German rider took the title last year in Göteborg and didn’t compete her top horse Shutterfly too frequently during the indoor season, to keep him as strong as possible for Las Vegas. Both Meredith and her super star Shutterfly know the way in the small arena of the Thomas & Mack Centre. The pair also won the 2005 Final, held in Las Vegas.

Another contestant who may do very well in the Rolex FEI World Cup™ Jumping Final is Michael Whitaker. He secured his ticket to Las Vegas in the last leg of the Western European League, ending up third in the last leg in ‘s Hertogenbosch.

Sixth Final

Michael Whitaker: “I really wanted to qualify with Portofino. This will be her sixth final!”

Ludger Beerbaum lost his top horse All Inclusive NRW to Denis Lynch, but managed to win the Dortmund Grand Prix with Coup de Coeur and doesn’t seem weakened. Beerbaum’s employee Marco Kutscher is in the winning mood, after being victorious in Vigo and Arezzo. Kutscher rides his Olympic mount, the spectacular stallion Cornet Obolenski.

Dutch rider Albert Zoer looks with high hopes and a little bit of uncertainty to the World Cup final. “Okidoki jumps great,” said the winner of the Bordeaux leg of the Rolex FEI World Cup™ competition. “But the arena in Las Vegas is very small, that doesn’t really suit Okidoki, he needs a bit more space. But the same goes for my other horse Sam. He is less experienced and has not flown before. That’s why I chose Okidoki.”

Edwina Alexander, the Australian rider who qualified in the Western European League, rides the small power house Isovlas Ithot du Chateau, the winner of London Olympia. Her pony sized horse may deal very well with the difficult circumstances in the small arena of the Thomas & Mack Centre.

Hope for the Future

Olympic gold and silver medalist Beezie Madden is not among the big favorites. She gave her top horse Authentic a big break after the Games in Hong Kong. “I’m riding my 9-year old horse Danny Boy”, said Beezie Madden. “I only started to ride him in Grand Prix this year, so if I would end up in the top 10 I would be ecstatic. I have a lot of hope for the future with him and I think it’s good for both him and myself to compete at a championship such as the Rolex FEI World Cup™ Jumping Final.”

Rolex FEI World Cup™ Dressage Final at a Glance

· The 2009 Rolex FEI World CupTM Dressage Final will be the series’ 24th. The first one was held in 1986.

· It will be the third to combine Dressage and Show Jumping; it will also be the third to be held in Las Vegas.

· Fifteen competitors from the following eight nations will compete: Australia; Canada; Columbia; Germany; Poland; The Netherlands; Sweden; and the USA.

· The 15 horses originate from six studbooks: KWPN (7); Hanoverian Studbook (1) Swedish Warmblood (3); Baden-Württemberg (1); Oldenburg Studbook (2); and Polish Warmblood (1).

· 15 horses: four stallions (IPS Painted Black, Briar, Don Charly, Kingston); two mares (Exquis Nadine and Rafalca); nine geldings.

· Last official show appearance of 18-year old stallion Briar showed by Swedish Jan Brink.

· Most experienced competitor: Anky van Grunsven (NED) with 13 participations and nine victories.

· Newcomers: Adelinde Cornelissen (NED); Marco Bernal (COL); Heath Ryan (AUS); and Jan Ebeling (USA) who will participate in their first World Cup Final.

· Oldest participant: Dutch Jeannette Haazen (54)

· Youngest participant: Dutch Adelinde Cornelissen (29).

An Open Ending

Competitions of the highest level can be expected at the 24th FEI World Cup™ Dressage Final in Las Vegas.

Looking back at the 2008/2009 season in the Western European League, the three victories of Adelinde Cornelissen, the four victories of Isabell Werth and the strong rides of Anky van Grunsven aboard IPS Painted Black stand out. However, there are some serious contenders who should definitely be taken into consideration and the 2009 Rolex FEI World Cup™ Dressage Final looks very open. It will certainly have more to offer than the traditional duel between Anky and Isabell.

Steffen Peters of the USA and Ravel have significantly improved since last summer’s Olympic debut. They are in great form and in February scored a record result in the Grand Prix at Wellington. Olympians Hans Peter Minderhoud (NED) and mare Exquis Nadine and Canadian Ashley Holzer and Pop Art also demonstrated growing expertise. The latter pair scored impressive wins in Florida this spring. Germany’s Monica Theodorescu, one of the early participants in the FEI World Cup™ Dressage which she won twice, in 1993 and 1994, is back in full strength with the talented Whisper.

The Best Final Ever

Isabell Werth (GER) has won the Final twice, in 1992 with her great mare Fabienne and in 2007 riding the big chestnut Warum Nicht FRH. For the 2009 Rolex FEI World Cup™ Dressage Final, she will compete on her individual Olympic silver medallist Satchmo and is delighted to take up the challenge. “And I like it! Anyone who really knows me would have seen that I never walk away from challenges in competition. Satchmo and I have built up mutual trust and form and we’ll see what that will bring.”

In accordance with the rules, title defender Anky van Grunsven was not allowed to bring Olympic gold medallist IPS Salinero to Las Vegas. However, although a stallion and probably not as imperturbable as most geldings, IPS Painted Black can in fact set top performances and is certainly not to be ignored. “Due to a lengthy break for IPS Salinero after the Olympic Games and to some sudden problems I had with my back, I wasn’t able to compete aboard IPS Salinero in two World Cup qualifiers. Although I was disappointed, we can’t argue about this. But you can count on me to give the very best I can! I love going back to Vegas!” Anky explained. She no doubt has special memories of the place where she married Sjef Janssen two years ago.

Youngest finalist Adelinde Cornelissen still can’t believe her luck. “I left for my first World Cup qualifier in Stockholm without any special expectations. But Parzival and I won and took home a new a car! It was far more then I had ever dreamt of, absolutely superb!” Adelinde said. She has no special expectations for the Final either but will do her very best. “I live one day at a time and try and do as well as possible.”

German judge Katrina Wüst expects the 24th Rolex FEI World Cup™ Dressage Final in Las Vegas to become the strongest Final ever. “Look at the field of competitors! I am looking so much forward to this Final. Beautiful Dressage is also about sharing emotions. And we love paying tribute to our heroes. The farewell ceremony for American heroine Brentina and the last show appearance of European hero Briar will also make the 2009 Rolex FEI World Cup™ Dressage Final an unforgettable Dressage party where top sport and its heroes will be celebrated!”
