Yup they were the breed of choice back then.  I loved them also but no way could afford one.

Now I am tall and the Arabs in my area are considered big if they reach 15.1 with most of them being 14.2- 15h so I feel too big on one.

I was wondering if you had been in Canada because I have a cousin through marriage (whom I havent met) Jackie Cochran and....her Mother-in-law, my blood aunt, raised purebred Arabians for many years in the 60's, 70's 80's, in her 70's she switched to miniature horses.

These horses were brought over by Cortez and his men durng their search for El Dorado. Some escaped after many harrowing unloads for the ships(they were pushed overboard.) Many times only the strong survived.  They lived wild in coastal regions of Mexico for cenuries, not mingling with other breeds.  In 1958 some American men discovered these horses and thought they would make ideal youth horses and brought back an number of mares and two stallions.  A registry was set up in 1959 and importing continued for 10 years before the registry was closed to outside horses.  These beloved, gaited little horses with such big hearts were a favored mount for youth and ladies all over the US for both english and western disciplines.  They are used for cutting, reining,barrels, poles, jumping, ect.  They excel at everything they do.  We have been raising these horses since 1989 when a pair of bred mares were gifted to my boyfriend and his brother.  Senorita was Scotts horse and he loved her.  She delivered Rosalita in 1990 and was bred back to the same stallion for a 1991 colt.  She had two previous get from the same stallion and those mares were also purchased.  That particular pairing produced some of the best western skilled horses. Miss Lightening was the oldest and had points in reining, Rosalita was trained for barrels and turned 17 seconds without effort.  her baby brother was never saddle trained.  Lady Shy was the second oldest and excelled at barrels and halter.  While we miss Senorita today, she was 26 when she passed away. These horses are long lived.  Miss Lightening is now 28 and our easiest keeper.  Check out the pics on my profile.
