When horse racing comes to mind, a herd of running Thoroughbreds vying for first is usually what comes to mind. However, there are different types of races geared towards different breeds that are becoming more popular throughout Canada and the US.
StandardbredsStandardbred racing is the second most prolific type of racing in North America. Horses pull small carts known as sulkies that are piloted by a jockey. They race in either a trot or pace. Except in continental Europe where only trotters can be found. Courses are usually about a mile long and can usually be completed in a little over two minuets.

Standardbred Canada and the
United States Trotting Association for more information.
Quarter HorsesQuarter horse racing has becoem much more popular over the last decade or so. When it first started, laying a full mile track was considered to be too expensive so instead a straight quarter mile track was put down. This eventually became the norm for the sport and is also the inspiration behind the quarter horse’s name. The races are run at a full gallop for the full duration of the race.

Arabians Another type of racing that’s catching on, especially in the southern USA and in western Canada is Arabian racing. It’s similar to Thoroughbred racing, only with Arabians.Organizations such as the
Darley Awards and the
Arabian Jockey Club offer awards, incentives and education regarding the sport in hopes of promoting it.
