Horse Have to be Kept Apart of Trail Rides

On any hack, everyone is careful to keep their horses apart. Mostly out of fear in case one spooks and kicks another or in case personalities don’t mix. Surprisingly horses prefer to be tail to nose on hacks. This gives them a sense of security and reassurance out in the big scary forests. It also has to do with their herd instincts and need for closeness.

Miniature Ponies are Ponies

A few people have made the mistake of spotting a large-dog sized equine and cooing to the owner about “What a cute pony you have!” This reaction will be met with either a patient smile or look of disapproval before informing you it’s a miniature HORSE. Miniature horses are considered to be horses in dwarf sizes. Most mini enthusiasts aim to breed their equines with the outcome looking exactly like a horse in terms of proportions;only smaller. So if you spot a horse you think you can fit into your purse, use the “H’ word, not the “P” word.

You Must Mount From the Left

Over my years of riding, I’ve heard some odd excuses to reason my exclusive mounting from the left. Everything from “It spooks the horse” to something about how I carry my crop on the right side. The real reason is a sword. Back in the day, knights in shining armor couldn’t mount from the right because their swords were in the way. To mount without accidentally stabbing their horses, the left side became the way to mount. Since then we’ve gotten rid of the swords and have kept our horses to the stables and show rings. But still the tradition of mounting from the left has kept on.

The truth is it doesn’t matter which side you get on from. If you’re keen to try it, go ahead. It will feel a little odd the first couple times. However adjusting to either side may be beneficial in the long run should an occasion come up where only the right side is available.
