Hi Shirley, sorry to see you had a fall. We just don't bounce as well anymore hey? We ended up having a Parelli instructor come stay at the ranch for 3 months. It was a great opportunity to learn, both my horse and I enjoyed the experience. Am now back home in Smithers BC. When I returned in late August I took a 4 day Glenn Stewart clinic(he trained with Pat Parelli for 12 years). Also a great learning opportunity and had a blast, has definitely deepened the bond between my horse and myself. The most important things I learned were to never be in a hurry - take the time it takes. Leave your agenda at home...don't take it to the barn. I brought a yearling Q/H home with me from down south and have played a bit with him in the last couple of weeks. Amazes me how quickly he catches on and how it has affected his approachability. He became much friendlier after a couple of sessions of Parelli games. Good stuff! Stay well and happy trails.

hello!!!!
how are you i am well[=]
this weekend was preety fun so ll tell u all about it!
on saterday i whent for a trail ride whith john he was on his big grey arab.
we folled the river along for ages it is was really nice scener. we saw heaps like turtles and fish ducks but what was really surprising was when we came acroos a mob of 40 or so kangroos.
there was a massive group of trees all relly close together and the branches were all prickley and spikey it was kinda like a forrest. under the tress it was all nice and green. we had to duck under tress to gert in and around when the horses ears pricked and they both lookedthe same way, and ther was 40 or more kangroos raceing past, partytime was a litle wary of them but sebastine [jhons horse] was dead qute i dont even think he really care he dosent care much about anything really hes onl 10 though but hes a bit ditzy. anyway...................
we kept on rinding on and came acroos some cows and a dead end, we decided to turn around and head back, all the cows got togeter and ran after us for a bit it was quite funny.
we bactracked till we came to a shallow bit [whitch was up to partys chest!] and we crrosed over when we got to the other side it was all flat and grassy it was soooo flat and it was flat for ages i think it was a thounsand acer paddock. jhon showed me the billabongs that were quite close to the river it was quite irrie looking at the billabong and the river was right next to it. we kept on riding and at the end we whent for canter whitch party time galloped........
anyway after that we got home
now heres the exciting bit!!!!!
on sunday i had a .................
GYMKARRNA!!!!!!!
my frs eva show and party time was the best!!!
in the hack we got 3rd
in bending we got nothing
in the flag race we got second
pony jump nothing
kehole 2nd
show jumping 3rd
trot race 1st
barrel race nothing

thats alll i entered and i am so happy with our results esplly since all the kds in my age group had around two horses each so they can enter each qdivison twice whitch i think is quite unfare but anyway im going rant now.........
most of those kids were soooo spolit! ordinring there parents around and siting down and doing nothing for there horses, and this one girl arrrrrh she wasent in my divison for show jumping but her horse kept on refusing a fence she screamed at her horses and was crying and geting so frustrayded at the poor horse, it made me soo angry surley she could see that its not the horses fault but hers? she should be cerecting herself not screeeming and blameing it on the horse!
weell i had a great day though
[=]
aftwer that i whent and mustered cows whitch was sooo much ffuun!!!
well got2go

Hello Shirley,

I hope you are well. I am happy to hear that you are back on and taking lessons. Is the trainer someone you have taken lessons with before or is this somebody new? How are the lessons going?

Did the lady complete her fences yet? Are the horses gone? Will you still be seeing/working with them when they are back home? Did you get any pictures yet? I am curious to see them.

I have continued my lessons without my black boyfriend and am now riding a grey Lusitano mare who is VERY different in character than he is. She is on go at all times and she is all about the seat. I really like her. We are both working on our left together. She doesn't like to make circles to the left, she just gets very crabby to the left in general. I am not so good to left either so it is good training for both us. I never knew making nice circles to the left could be so rewarding and satisfying!! I was very happy with my lesson today and we even cantered for a bit which I had never done before on this horse. I have another lesson tomorrow. I will keep you updated!

Hi shirley, I was just adding a picture of Cassie when I came across your old pic of Cash and message.

That's great that you pursued Buckskin reg. as well as QH.
I think that the Buckskin association will be extremely beneficial in coming years to produce some great American buckskin colored mounts.

The genetic viability is so great because they're registering Buckskins and Duns all across the board regardless of breed. This will in time produce phenomenal Buckskins and Duns.

Breeding for certain colors within one gene pool (like QH) is even more detrimental to a breed than even "closed" studbook management

The Quarter Horse Breed still allows plenty of TB blood in the form of Appendix Quarter Horses, and this can only refine/clean the blood, but wont do much to preserve the "type" in the long run

I believe that there Appendix program should be more open, and allow qualified individuals from other associations (like Buckskin, Palomino)

Eventually all our "closed"/"pure" breeds will be run in a more sound way. Did you know that The quarter horse breed was around as an "open stud book" for 200 years before someone decided they needed to be kept "pure"? This only happenned in 1941 and the first registered QH was a Thouroughbred named Wimpy.

Those years in our American History were when we made most of our mistakes in breeding. That's also when someone decided that instead of developing our own Olympic Breed (Warmblood) We would instead import european horses and breed "PURE" strains of them.

The Eropeans have long established Warmblood programs where the very basis of the Breed is to constantly seek better blood from around the world.

After all ALL Equines come from very similar ancestries, so they all are basically crosses of one another anyway.

Only certain, truly pure breeds, can be managed in this "pure" way. Truly pure breeds descend from only one Primitve Equine. Most of our breeds contain the blood of 2 or more primitive Equines
Such as Arabs, Andalusians, Akhal Teke, Norwegian Fjords.

Yep, Hat Tricks (my first horse) dumped me several times when I was working on getting my whole body relaxed. He would all of a sudden disappear from under me and WHOMP--on the ground.
Nowadays of course I have to depend on my stirrups to keep my balance since my MS sort of does my balance in. Feet in stirrups, heels down, knees down, head up & looking forward, that is how I work on my balance now. And I keep some tension in my leg muscles, nothing conscious, just what comes from doing the above. I think when I tried to relax completely that my body moved too much and irritated my horse, who decided that I needed a reminder of how to ride properly.

Who is Fred? What's his breeding? He looks interesting.

I am sorry you fell. I worry about falling myself, but one ring I ride in has deep sand which can help when a rider falls by absorbing the shock. The other ring is grass.
When I get nervous on a horse the first thing I do is put my heels down. This strengthens the legs, gets the legs "around" the barrel better, and lets the horse know you are on top of him!! It also helps get the rider's knees further down in the saddle which also helps security. Just take your time getting back to the more vigorous riding. I know that I have never fallen off at a walk, though I may regret saying this, fate might think I'm tempting it! Head up, heels down--this is the best prevention for falling I know of, though everyone can fall off. That is why we get back on, otherwise no-one would ride.

You fell? When? I must have missed that post.
I used to be very afraid of falling, but eventually I've gotten to where I just am at peace that sometimes it happens. The best I can do is try and keep my seat through a spook or a runaway situation, and If I'm gonna fall than I atlest keep my hands on the reigns so my horse does'nt run off.

Oh well, we all have to fall sometimes, The last time I fell It was about 2 years ago on 4 yo thoroughbred that I was teaching to jump.
She was such a natural, I just kept raising it and raising it, when the rail was around 4 feet it just was too overwhelming for her.

She rushed at it really fast, came to a dead stop at the base and then popped straight up in the air like a cat, she cleared the fence but She completely "popped" me straight up in the air and I landed on my back like 15 feet to the side. I know it sounds pretty scary but it's just a part of learning how to train properly. (she once tried to jump a 5' gate when I asked her to walk up and unlatch it)

Ferdinand is also quite green for four years, but not as green as Lacy, because he's a Stallion I've taken every precaution to keep him safe and gentle, both on the grounfd and under saddle.

Here he's cantering along on the correct lead in the back (right lead) but the front end is leading with the left. With more time in the schooling ring he'll gain the balance to stay in frame and maintain the corect bend in circle work.

What a gorgeus pond and cabin, did you build it out of native trees?
Next place we buy might have enough pines to do that.

we've been looking up in Marti Langley's Area for a summer home, might be up there again soon, before the snow comes.

By next summer we hope to have a nice COOL place to go. It's just too hot here. average summer days are 95 or so and heat waves have gotten to 103 degrees.

It's pretty mild here through the winters, we get some real cold snaps, but It's always bright and sunny. We only get something like 12 inches of rain per year. The spring and fall are especially beautiful.

We can only afford a couple of acres though. Not nearly enough to live on permanently, or graze 6 horses on.

So we'll just pack up the whole farm and move back and forth a couple times a year.

Hey Shirley, thought I would update you on Ryn and his new friend. This summer we've been working really hard at just staying calm and learning trust. At some point he had learned to be afraid of anyone mounting him. Sunday the girl and I took him into the round pen after her just leading him around grooming him and generally bonding. Once in the pen I lunged him and checked for his buttons to see if all was still in place. Sure enough all were there and he was in a very quiet gentle mood. He was already saddled which the girl did before we came to the round pen. So after a few more checks to see if he would stand with the mounting block (he did), the girl got on while I held the lead line. She was ecstatic! Her dream had come true. I was very proud of them both. We walked around a bit me leading her guiding him and checking him on his whoa, turns and backup. He was very willing and responsive. I am thankful all went well he's a sweet horse and she is a very gentle sweet spirited girl.

Aaahhh - it's my best girl! We're still doing those stretches! It's been a wonderful way to relieve the girthiness issue with her.
No ride tonight. It didn't rain at work - as far as I can tell from the cave - but here in Mason the gals at Darrell's said it's been raining all day long.
Annabelle sure is unhappy with me. Goats just don't like to get wet.

Shirley!!!!!!!!!

I'm glad to hear that your okay and you are riding again. What happend exactly? I saw the comment youl left about the incident but not enough information. what happend? How long were you not riding for? What happened to the horse that the bionic women had to get back on his feet?
When do you expect to ride Cooper again? Are still taking care of all the horses? So many questions sorry, I have to get caught up.

The weather can really effect people's moods and energy levels. I hope it cools there a bit. I am also slightly jealous as we had about two real weeks of summer and that's it. The weather seems to be really cooling down.

I haven't been riding for about a month and a half and had not had the chance to be on the site because I have been busy with the guests from out of town (who have extended their stay by the way until the 21st...) and was working on the Breast cancer walk in Montreal . To walk all participants had to raise at least 2 thousand dollars and I also had to train a bit because it was 60 kilometers long and it lasted two days. I got through it and will certainly do it again next year! It was an amazing experience.

I did get to ride on Tuesday and Sunday but to my dismay the black giant has developed some really bad habits. I won't be able to ride for him awhile as I cannot control him whatsoever. Before I took the riding break maybe the last three lessons, I really felt we were getting somewhere as a team. I was confident with him. I wasn't worrying that he would trip, that he would kick( which he does when I usually ask for a canter on the left..) We were going to take on the world. This week was a disaster. He won't go forward, is kicky and has started to this thing which he starts to go in the direction I am telling him to go drops a bit a swirves to the opposite way. He is also refusing almost completely to go the left even in a trot...I can't even get him to walk. I think in my lesson I actually went around the arena maybe 3 times in total as he would just try to circle and then when I would try to push him to continue the circle he would weave back another direction. He spooked at the light coming in from the window. My trainer said that before she use to work him everyday (6 on 7) to get him where he was and she no longer had the time to work him so he had started to develop these problems. She will not let me ride him until he gets back to his old self. I will miss riding him but will certainly spend time with him when I go for my lessons. On the other hand, at the end of July the big black boy and I did a clinic with Jean Paul Pare and we had a great time I learned a lot.

Thank you for writing and hope to hear from you soon. I will be back on Barnmice on a regular basis.

Don't let the mosquitos win!

Nope - I even took an extra day off, so I cleaned house on Friday. Now we're puttering around and relaxing. I'm going out to play with the horses soon. I can't even play on my computer - believe it or not I filled my Mac!!! I also need to order a new DVD burner so I can unload my Mac:)
Gotta go play before the rain comes, more latter. Hope you guys are having a great weekend. Love the picture of Cash.

HI Shirley,
Our informative walk in the capitol went like this: we carried signs asking that wild horses not be harmed, and led a wild horse while we did it. When people passing Nevada's capitol offices stopped to ask questions, we told them aout the problem!
It always works better than shouting.

Hi Shirley
Briggs has an awesome personality. He is 3 so still sometimes has baby brain but very quiet and extremely willing and very curious. He's not a spooky kinda guy and very often falls asleep when I'm grooming him. He loves to drink from the hose when I am cooling him off. I love his coloring too and even though you are not supposed to buy a horse for its color it totally suits his personality. Is that a pic of your horse. What a beauty!! Have a great weekend

Hi Shirley
I'm 46, had a morgan mare growing up, gave up horses to have a family, I have two boys in their twenties and a teenage daughter at home. 7yrs ago I had to get back into horses. Had a young running quarter horse that is the sweetist guy, but not as forward as I wanted, got this little arab for my daughter ,and him and I just click. My daughter drives him and I ride him trail and endurance. He is 15yrs old and takes about 27 miles of giddyup before he calms down. I am currently looking for property to start an event centre( will have to board a few horses to make payments). And am getting mature riders together in my area to start a saddle club. Parkland mature Saddle club, so a PMS day is a good day!!! Thank you for the welcome, it is appreciated. Diane
