I have a saddlebred that I show country pleasure. He worked very well all summer, and then all of a sudden he started to rear up on me! If he's not sore, and he's not bored...then what else could be the problem? Does anyone thing his show career should be put behind him? I'm not sure how to work through this with him without getting hurt....

I only have limited experience with this, but my horse reared when he was scared...... where is he rearing, in the arena???? is there something there that frightened him? You might need a professional for this one Nicole..... My trainer just sat on Oliver and laughed a little, did not get scared, then backed him around and moved his feet alot when he came back down... and to my knowledge, he's not done it since... I hope you guys work this out. Rearing is a scary thing... but could be your horse is refusing something for some reason. :)
at first when he did this i thought he may have been scared of something, so i got off and hand walked him around the arena. he was fine. then i got back on, and he did it again. so i got off and long lined him, and he was fine. so i don't know....he's been vet checked, i changed up the routine, i've fought with him, i 've babied him, urrr....ive done it all! Just gotta find the right reason why he's doing this!
What about the saddle? Have you had the fit checked?
Saddle fit, teeth, and simply getting off when he rears can give him what he wants. Also, he maybe ring sour, tired of showing and schooling all the time with no fun in the outdoors. Where did you get him from, can the former owners tell you anything?
yes...the saddle fits. His former owners are out of state and hard to get ahold of....so I'm basically on my own when it comes to figuring him out. I do try to take him outdoors as much as possible...it's just he get's nervous by himself, and I don't have anyone to ride with during the week. I could probably set up a date for a trail ride before we start training for this show season and see what happens...it's worth a try!
Hey Nicole, how's it going with your horse? Were you able to figure him out?
Somewhat....Lately I have to made sure there was someone in the arena with me when I ride so when he starts to do that the come after him with a lunge whip! lol. show season starts in a couple months so we will see how it works once we are not home.
