The video community for horse people everywhere

Hi there--I have another goofball question to toss at ya'll! I plan on getting fly masks for my ponies this year, but in discussions with a neighbor she suggested using WD-40 to keep flies away!

Sounds crazy and unhealthy to me--I still plan on using the masks, but I just had to ask: Have you ever heard of this? Tried it?

I have heard of WD 40 being used for many different things but NEVER on horses for flies. Aside from the chemicals alone I can't imagine how something as a lubricant could be used to keep flies away. One person I know uses a home mixture of tea tree oil, vinegar and Avon Skin so Soft. Pony may smell a bit like a pickle but I will have to admit this mixture does seem to work really well. We have a ton of deer flies in this heat and it does seem to work well.

A fly mask is meant of course to keep the flies out of your pony's eyes, I don't think you would want to put WD 40 any where near their eyes or anywhere they could lick at it for that matter.
Yes I have heard of it, and yes one year I tried it. I only used it on their legs, just in case it could irritate their eyes or they would ingest it if on their bodies. I know they itch their legs too but I did want to try it to see if I could see any difference between WD-40 and other commercial concoctions or my home made stuff. None of the above really worked for me.. The flies still came and irritated.
