I have never used electrolites, but many people do and I have hear many different opinions on them. So what do people here think of the practice.

I always use electrolytes, and would never do a ride without them. Just make sure you get a kind you can't over dose your horse on, as I've heard some electrolytes will shut down your horse if too much is used.
do you use a commercial product or mix your own, how much do you use?
Last year I used Phatman, but this year I don't know which kind to get. I know lots of people that use Perform and Win, and I've heard Ride Rite is good too. I just use how ever much it says.
Depends on the ride and the weather if we use electrolytes or not. A cold, wet day with non-stressful terrain we might skip the electrolytes. Hot, dry weather or difficult terrain we will definitely use electrolytes.Training runs - nope (we have a 10 mile stretch of flat roads to condition on).

As we tend to use whole grains and beet pulp as a feed and add in loose salt and trace minerals we know that our horses get ample trace elements for easy times and regular performance. If you use a prepared feed you might be able to get away with no using electrolytes. For high octane performance we leave nothing to chance so we electrolyte.

It also depends on your horse - some horses require more of certain elements whereas others do not.

When we use electrolytes, again it depends on which one suits your horse, we have used Perform N Win, Enduromax, Ride Rite and a few others that I cannot remember the names of right now. Some can be too strong for a sensitive horse and some are not strong enough in some elements to prevent muscle cramping or other related issues. Play around at rides to find the right electrolyte and the right dosage. Make sure there aren't a lot of sugars or fillers in your electrolyte.

We also use probiotics on our distance horses to aid digestion and absorption of trace minerals.
I was told by one long time endurance person that if you make the electrolites available to your horse the horse will take only what it needs and never overdose. Has anyone tried this?
Yes and most definitly for the longer distances. Endurance rider with over 2500 miles
