2011 rides for Endurance Riders of Alberta are on the web page (http://enduranceridersofalberta.com/). Next ride is this weekend! Ron Janzen Memorial, 12, 25, and 50 mile divisions. Check the web page for rides throughout the rest of the summer.

The new Endurance Riders of Alberta web site is up and mostly running, all the 2010 rides are posted.

The best END bloodlines are those by the deceased Arabian stallion *Statistic sire of Theatric and Heraldic. If you follow the endurance world those 2 horses need no introduction.

As 95% of the horses doing END are Arabians and that is what my breeding and competing background covers, I'll use this breed for an example.

Asgard Arabians, Belesmo Arabians, Al Marah Arabians and Running Bear Farm are just a names of the top distance breeders in current times. Rushcreek Ranch is a consistent breeder over many, many years.

Most breeders rely on Polish/Russian cross Arabians whereas others throw in some Crabbet for stride length. Russian and Poland prove out their horses with racing as well as conformation inspections before allowing those horses to breed meaning that the resulting offspring will be sane, trainable and athletic.

This doesn't mean that other Arabian strains aren't good with a few individuals, the strains above have proven consistent Top 10ers over a longer period of history with more horses.

As you are in the BC area I would look at KD Colonel. I've seen him in person and he's a nice horse and his 50 mile END record is nice, considering he has just finished a track racing career.

However you will still need to look at the mare and decide what needs improving and find a mate that consistently improves those faults. The sire would also have to have a complimentary pedigree for the mare as well.

What bloodlines are considered best or most competitive in endurance? What are your personal experiences or what stallions have you bred your mares to or what bloodlines have you boought or wanted to buy, and why. I am trying to choose a broodmare and I am very undecided.

What and where is the earliest endurance or CT ride in BC for 2010?

I live in southern central BC, the north end of the Okanagan Valley. I will be looking for a registered Arab broodmare this coming spring. If she had foaled one or more times so much the better. She may not get ridden, just used as a broodmare, so a horse with an injury that removes her from riding I would consider. It would have to be something that would not be exacerbated by being heavily in foal. My horses have a pasture and daily grazing, shelters, barn; they live in small groups and live at least a somewhat 'free' life. I have 50 years experience with horses. If anyone has a horse that might fill the bill, or knows of one, please let me know. I am particularly interested in a good natured, conformationally correct mare. I will skip the great athlete with a crazy personality!

Skimikin Lake CTR and Endurance Race will not be held this year as no organized events are to take place there this year... not sure of the exact reason.

What boots are youusing on your horses now? What do you think is best? I am very behind: I am boggled to see all the brands and styles out now.

I've been checking the website www.bcctra.ca and it doesn't look like the ride is posted, so I'm not sure if there will be one this year... www.erabc.com (endurance) doesn't have a Skimikin Lake ride on their events page this year either.

Ari, have you heard about Skimikin yet? I will ask around as I live not to far from the area.
