Well Gold Fever is finally testing ready like I think she should. We use three different tests to check their readiness.

Refractometer - this tests the level of colostrum in the milk. We normally look for a jump up or down in the numbers, so the test has to be done consistently. When you get a jump of 5 or more digits they usually foal in 24 hours. We have been using this test for a couple years to get an idea of the best way to read it. This test is nice because you only need one drop of milk and you wash the refractometer and put it away when you're done. No additional purchases.

Predict-a-foal: these test strips are available at Jeffers Equine and we have used them for years. They have five squares on them and you mix 1/2 cc of milk with distilled water then dip the strip. You watch for changes in color on the squares. Five Squares = foal in 24 hours...usually. The disadvantage of these is that you have to have 1/2 cc of milk...soemtimes that's impossible to get due to the mare not having it, or not letting it down or you can't touch her long enough to get it. lol

Foal-Time: This is a new test strip that has just been released and we have been blessed to be a guinea pig of sorts this year. We love it. It takes one drop of milk - there is no mixing you just read the strip immediately and it has been the most accurate method we have used to date. I just love them and can't promote them enough.

I am sharing this information because people ask us all the time what they all mean. I should have done it earlier in the season... sorry!

So...keep Gold Fever on your screen....We should have a foal in 12 hours.

Well it appears that Lil bit has an ulcer, which makes her lie down alot...which keeps Wee Bit from nursing, which caused him to colic...which made him hypoglycemic...which caused seizures.....amazing.

I hope the little guy does alright,he seems to be resting ok. I was watching him nurse a few minutes ago and didn't notice anything unusual.

Vet has been watching and Weebit can't nurse for Lil Bit laying down...he is on the way.

To fill you in....Weebit (what I call him) had a temp yesterday of 104.1 banamine given IV and he was kept in where it was shaded and secluded. He was kept in all night with no signs of fever.

This morning I had a doctor appt for lab work so Shannon was going to feed alone. She called me and said to get to the barn. I ran down and he was seizing...normal temp but seizing. Vet said banamine....so banamine given. He was good for about 4 hours - we did a video of Dezyn, Shannon clipped Paris and I went back tot he barn to do photos. When I walked in the barn I said...Shannon...is he Seizing? She went in and sure enough he had started again.

Vet called and Karo Syrup given. We think that he was having a gas colic yesterday, which led to him not nursing enough, which led to hypoglycemia, which led to the seizures....that's our theory for the moment.

So, it's imperative that we know when he nurses and if he acts odd at all. There are two views of him and hopefully that will help you catch him if he acts odd.

Your eyes are very very much appreciated, however...when he has a seizure (which I hope will not occur) it's hard to watch...and we understand if you can not. Any help you can lend is greatly appreciated.

Modified to add....Bit is a lay about...she has been through her entire pregnancy and she will fool you into thinking there's a problem. Don't panic if she rolls or lays out alot.

ALSO - Gold Fever is testing Five Squares.

I'm so glad you are still watching. We are closing in with Gold Fever...I don't think she'll be much longer.
