Hi Heather,I am seriously considering starting my own (small) breeding herd. I have 2 Arabian horses at the present time, but due to recent back surgery,my showing and riding is questionable. It has been very disheartening, but since watching your mini,s I am encouraged again. I have many yrs. exp. with horses and I am a nurse,so I know I could make a go of it. My question to you is how do you suggest I get started? Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Hi Heather, can you advise where one could buy a refractometer? A friend of mine has a colostrumeter, and I've used colostrum strips. I like this idea much better. Not in a hurry, no foals this year...but sure want for the next year, as I hope we will have a good number in 2011. So, I'm also indulging my passion for foaling through the little ladies here. Thank you

A refractometer is a device that allows you to take one or two drops of mare's milk and check the colostrum quality. It's important to use it consistently so you can monitor the # - you look for a big jump either up or down. For instance...Right now Sadie is testing 17 on the refractometer. Last night she was at 12...that's a jump worth watching. Charm is at 10 and last night was at 8 - not a big deal...

let's see if it will post my photo of what the refractometer looks like...

Thanks Heather - the babies are adorable!
What is a refractometer? It sounds like a weapon from a Superman comic! :)

I'm sorry for the change in cam again....we really are trying hard to accomodate everyone....Cameo (Silhouette's filly) was cold tonight so she's in with Striker and Scottie...and Unforgettable & Sasha are in as well. This meant that Ace & Wishy had to be moved and we chose to put Wishy out for the night as well as Dancer, based on their bags and milk tests. So that's not Dancer you see - that's Ace....but we aren't moving signs for one night.

Sadie appears to be the closest - she is testing 3 squares and is at 17 on the refractometer. Everyone else is pretty much the same.

Poor little Cinny she has hardly moved in the past 3 days. I hope she foals today!

I managed to reroute some cables so that we have all the cams we need on the two cams. Cam 3 is off....enjoy!!!

Sadie is testing closest at this point, but we still feel Cinny will go first.
