Doing the right thing under such duress is extremely difficult and exhausting.  I congratulate you on being able to make intelligent decisions under these circumstances, but am very sorry for the sad experiences you have had.

Just been watching TGIF's foal. What a gorgeous little bundle of life. My computer wasn't working properly and this is the first I've seen of them. We're all going to think positive now... Lot's to be thankful for.

Oh such a shame. He will be missed. He was gorgeous. Another little angel in heaven. Hopefully all this sad news is behind you guys now. I hope Freya and you guys are doing alright. <3

Finally I'm getting the updated messages. Don't know what the problem was. Now, I'm up to date on the latest. I was sad to read that there more problems. I pray this will all resolve itself and I concur with Betty. May the rest of the foaling be boringly normal...fat, healthy babies, and healthy moms.

Our vet came this morning and gave the colt a thorough examination.  We tried to use a lamb nipple hoping that would suit him better.  In trying this our vet did several other tests and discovered that the colt had no swallow reflect....he was not swallowing.  When we placed anything in his mouth he drew his tongue back, which is not normal, and he refused to swallow.  So, all night long, all the fluids we were putting into him were "luckily" going down the correct pipe...most of them.  Some were not.  We pulled two IGG's and he failed them both.
We have never had a foal fail an IGG.  This was definitely a first for us.  We discussed giving plasma but without a swallow reflex it was inevitiable that he would continue to decline and possibly end up with pneumonia from aspirating, or just continue to fail from lack of nutrition.  Tubing him was an option, but would not correct his swallow reflex.  Plasma was an option but would not correct his swallow reflex.  There was nothing that would correct it so we made the decision to put him to sleep now rather than making him struggle longer.
He was a beautiful colt and Freya ended up being a good mom.  Such a shame...it's hard to make a decision like this when everything else is working.  With Bug it was cut and dry....still hard, but so very obvious.  With Domino it was not as obvious until more hands on examinations were done.  It's been an exceptional foaling season until this week.  Let's hope it's behind us now.  Three to go.

I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing yet another complicated delivery. How many different problems can there be? You must all be exhausted. Another foal that would not live without your intervention no matter how "smart" he is. Hope you get some rest soon and that he figures out how much more food he gets when he sucks the right thing. Maybe the rest will be just boringly normal. would be nice. All the best.

Poor Heather and Shannon have to be completely drained!  By all rights, he looked so perfect, seemed so perfect till it came time to nurse.  This has to be driving them nuts.  Hope he comes around quickly.

Sorry guys, we have had another all nightwear that is continuing into an all day event.
Freya came around really well on her own. She still has her moments but some are justified. The colt has still not nursed. He is not a dummy foal, just a stubborn foal who won't stop sucking on his upper lip long enough to open his mouth. When we intervene he fights and shuts down. He knows where the nipples are but won't stop sucking his tongue and upper lip long enough to put it in his mouth. He butts her bag constantly which causes her to stream and drip milk and he licks that off of his tongue and nose.
We have syringed enough colostrum into him to keep him going but this is not working.
We have tried a bottle, etc but nothing works. When he gets close Freya nuzzles his butt and knocks him off. We hold her for hours only to have him stand under the udder sucking his lip. If you could see him on cam you would swear he was nursing because he stands so still right where he should. To top it off his eyelids are turning under which means the lashes are rubbing his corneas. The vet is on the way to tack them up with a couple stitches. Hopefully she will also have more ideas than were offered last night. Shannon and I are exhausted and frustrated. Shannon has dubbed him "dum dum" . His name is actually Domino Effect.
We will post more when we can.

Ahh..I'm so frustrated. The last message I have is from Lesley 6 hours ago. I get notification in me mail box that there are updates but they are not coming through on Mare Stare. Anyone have any ideas what the problem might be? Of course, I probably won't be able to access your comments. Could you please try Chat Privately, maybe I can pick your message up there. Thanks lots.
