It varies Amy.  Most mares foal at night because in the wild it's the safest time for them - under cover of darkness.  MY mares will eat, lay down, foal while I walk away and continue eating hay/straw...anything in reach. LOL  I literally had a mare eat breakfast, lay down and foal as I walked by - no warning.  They don't read the books...dang it.

What time to most foals arrive? Is it in the middle of the night?  I'm assuming you keep a log - ever check to see if there IS a time of night that averages out more then others?  Just curious.  Thanks ..<3

Thank you Chantal.  You would think after 7 years of doing this I would know how to spell it. LOL  Flehming....gotta type it a few times and maybe my brain will actually store it. :)

I was in a huge rush this morning so I didn't update.  She is still barely changing colors on the test strips...so basically one above ready.  She has jumped up a few on the refractometer to 15/16...  With the refractometer we look for a huge jump usually up, but we don't rely on it 100% which is why we use the test strips, which we do rely on.

I just returned home and she seems quiet.

thank you, Chantal, I now know what that is and what it is called.  I've always seen horses do it but never knew or thought to ask if the action had a specific name :-))

Sorry I'm on my phone and it has autocorrect. It's flehming, its when they pull their upperlip up. They do it when they smell something, but also when they feel pain.

what does fleming mean?  I went on line and all I could find was people named Fleming :-)
