This page is dedicated to watching the mares on Mare Stare, starting with the mini donkeys at Half Ass Acres. But be warned....it is highly addictive.

Dayle has been kind enough to allow us to peek into her barn this foaling season since I have no babies arriving at my farm this year. Here is her lineup... 1) HHAA Bumbles - Due January ??, 2014 (separated from jack Feb. 24th, 2013)2)…Continue

We have found that alot of mares (at least ours) allow the foal to nurse when they are laying down. We have photos over the years of this because it's so bizarre and humorous. I think it's great that the mare will allow it because the baby seems to wait until the mom lays down, then they jump up, nurse, and lay down while the mare stays up and gets no rest. LOL
It's amazing the things you will see on cam that you wouldn't have otherwise. It opens up a whole new world of observations that you would not have known or seen otherwise.
How many times have you lef the barn, gone to the house, and gone back to the barn and thought your mare hadn't moved, hadn't rolled, hadn't pawed...etc because you couldn't see it? LOL I think the cams are a God send - to have so many be able to catch what we may not. Okay - done rambling. I actually slept last night, thank goodness.
For those of you who watched diligently before Chantilly foaled you will remember that she had very little time to rest, sleep and lie down. She is taking advantage of that now. She is enjoying her stall and enjoying her time to rest and recoup before she is put back with the herd. She is an older mare and the filly was a good size filly. She also delivered the placenta very quickly after the birth - very similar to a red bag delivery, which is always more painful for some reason.
I have also learned that the pain tolerance on every mare is different. I don't think she's a "drama queen", but perhaps she gives in to her pain a little more easily. You have to remember that every time that filly nurses she has contractions to put her uterus back into shape.
She is on medication, she is being monitored by our vet on cam and she is fine. We appreciate your concerns, but she is fine. Rosemarie, the filly has perfectly straight legs. If anything she's not overly happy about being strapped down with so many pieces of clothing. Hopefully it will get in the upper 30's today as we are being told and we can unblanket her for a bit - at least a few blankets.
So glad this is not my mare so I don't have to worry about them (in real life)!
Filly looks grand, but mare is lying down more then I'd be happy with, please tell me she's OK!
Tilly seems to be lying down alot, she looks uncomfortable. The filly is beautiful, congrats to all!!
