I bet the QH mare is just sore, she seems to be letting him nurse now.. hopefully that's it..

Awww!  She's calmed down quite a bit.  Don't know if he's got the hang of it yet but she's sure allowing him all the practice time he needs now.  HOW SWEET!!!!!!!  He is really really sweet.

Oops.  Hope you all understood that.  She likes him on the left, not on the right??

Thanks for the info Michelle.  I can sure understand getting it dry and I can even understand the coat if it's really cold there.  Not that I like see it though ;)

It seems that mare doesn't mind the colt eating on the left side of her but doesn't prefer him to try to eat from the left.  Funny huh?  He'll "get it" if that's what she is indeed up to.  I can't see if it is eating when it goes on her left side but she doesn't seem to be using her leg to get him away like she does when he's on the right.

I've haven't been watching the QH mare, I'll check it out.. Hope everything is okay, some mares can be a little touchy right now with horemone's going crazy..  Violet, everyone has their way of foaling out mares, we typically will go in during foaling if necessary, if not, I let mother nature do it's thing until mom has rested and that last bit of blood has transferred thru navel.  After that we will go in as they did, towel off the baby, allow momma to clean it at the same time and then dip the navel stump.  We then tie up the after birth to make sure the mare doesn't step on it, strip the stall put new bedding down and get out.  Sounds like a lot but these things need to take place.  You are very right the mare does need to bond and clean her baby.  I also wait to hay the mare until I see her pay plenty of attention to the foal.

My sister was the one that posted that.

She seems much more interested in eating her fresh supply of food, doesn't she?  Wondering if it would be best to wait until bonding happens and foal eats to clean up and feed her and all.

why isn't QH mamma letting him near her? Is that normal at first? poor thing, every time he gets close she gives him the boot.
