Thank you Sharon.  There are some that don't agree with being present or helping.  However I've seen far too many foalings go badly because the owner sat back and just watched and waited to "let her do it naturally".  Only to figure out that the foal was badly positioned.  Their time to be reactive and save the foal was greatly diminished from their lack of hands on.

I will take my lumps and be proactive.  I'd like to have as much time as possible to reposition before that mare and foal are distressed.

And you're right - they were lucky with your mare and filly.  That could have been so bad.  Glad to hear it went well!

Heather, I did want to comment on your methods on foaling, as I read earlier about how you're very hands on. That's how it should be and I commend you. I worked in a breeding barn of a large Arabian horse ranch in the early 80's, and we were always right there and involved throughout. There is so much that can go wrong, a lot of people don't have a clue about that until you experience it first hand. My favorite time was foaling time and mid-wifing. It's always a miraculous event.

Also, I have three minis that I took care of for a wealthy couple in Beverly Hills before they gave them to me. Before I became their groom, they had bred the mare. She foaled alone with only the gelding in the same stall and they awoke to find a new filly. I constantly shake my head wondering what they were thinking.....and I believe that it was a very traumatic event for my mare and miraculously, filly and dam both survived and the gelding was so good to them. My mare is very sensitive about having her tail even lifted or her back-end touched to this day. Keep up the good work.
