Help! My four year old gelding has decided to start kicking when things don't happen fast enough for him. ie; the stall door, the trailor door. I'm all for the non-resistence training but right now am drawing a blank as to how to get my boy to stop doing this.

This is our first dealings with an abcess too. I'm not liken it much and I suspect Cash is liking it even less. Tonight he still was very sore even with 2 grams of Bute. His leg was more swollen and his other front is wrapped to help support the tenton. Both his hind legs are stocked up from standing in his stall. I will go out early in the morning to give him some pain med and hose down his legs. I am concerned about the period of time between 2 a.m.(when his 12 hrs. are up for his next dose) and when I get there. The vet said to just give it to him about 8 or 9 when I get there but with him as uncomfortable as he was tonight, I'm not letting it go that long. But I do have to get his 'every 12 hrs' schedule so it's falling at decent times....like 8 or 9. a.m. & p.m. I hate feeling so inept with these kinds of new issues for me. Especially when I see him hurting. Maybe I'll just get up even earlier and get his med in him and then I can stretch it out to get on a more reasonable time later. I can take a nap ~~ he can't help himself. Okay, I got that figured out. I hate feeling so helpless for him....

Poor Cash.... I hope he's feeling real better soon. I've never dealt with an abcess..... it seems so painful for the poor horse.... Jen

I got to the barn and was not happy with myself cause was feeling worse. No nicker or whinney. He just stood very still. He didn't want to come out as it hurt to walk. I did call the vet. Turned out to be an abscess that she thinks is going to come out at the top of his hoof. I will have to look into herbal remedies. I know they are available and I prefer to go that way but up till now I haven't taken the time to learn much about it for horses. I'm not quick to give Cash anything like that either. It was suggested last night to give him bute but I opted not to cause he didn't seem sore enough as I weighed things out. I do like the ice pack idea. We wrapped it with a poultice pad and then used some polo wrap on his other leg so it would help support that tenton as he would be standing on it longer. The vet wants him on stall rest. She said if he seems to be in less pain tomorrow, it would be okay to let him in a private grazing area for a little. I asked if a little is 15 min. or an hour and she said 15 minutes cause we
don't want him feeling better on the bute and then getting too roudy. I agree with you that it does depend how they are acting in the stall while they are trying to mend. A weaver sure wouldn't do good with stall rest if his front leg was hurting like Cash.
Looking forward to your video when you find it.
Enjoy Horsen Around!.

I will. I have no idea where the video went. I hope Cash is better soon. I used a healing oil called melrose oil on toby. I bought an ice holder for his leg and iced it a few times a day. I never give him pain meds because I don't trust them with his liver..... but I do have herbal remedies.... and I made my horse be on stall rest. which I think doesn't do anything if they pace..... my horses only walk and don't race around too much so I left him out to walk on his own, but pacing and getting hyped up in the stall seemed worse to me... Let us know what you decide for Cash. It depends on the horse don'tcha think?

Sounds fun! I'll peek when I get back from the barn. Cash has a sore leg and his on stall rest today. I'm out to check on him and probably do a little ice treatment. This is my first first hand experience with this type of thing. Ice or poutice or body rub or rubbing alcohol? Wrap or not to wrap? pain med or no pain med? Let him go out for a while supervised or NOT! There's probably a 100 different opinions on what to do here.
Please send some good healing energy to Cash.

I have a video.

I'll put it up. :) I can't put up my own creations of video while I'm training my horse but this one is an example of how Oliver comes when I call him... let's see what his ears are doing... my trainer told me last night when he came over for a visit that they are back too much and so I'm gonna work on that.... but I'm gonna go watch the video.... I wonder if you'll be able to find it. :)

I am not the rider or owner of the QH I just posted a pic of. It's a mare where I board. As usual, I get attached if I'm around them much at all.
