This is Norman, a 13yr old,  17.2, bay, OTTB.  He has the heart of a superstar even after everything he has been through.  I adopted him 2 years ago from a rescue here in Ontario and it was love at first sight.  Norman is a little special because not only is he a gentle giant but a year ago Norman lost his right eye to an infection but it hasn't changed him or slowed him down.

I adopted an OTTB about seven months ago and am retraining him for dressage.  He had one win as a racehorse, and I am thrilled he came to the Thoroughbred rescue where I volunteer so I could adopt him.  He's the best!

Last year I sold my experienced show horses. "Hai Waive+" Canadian Nationals top 10 in Show Hack AAOTR, Regional Champ in Showhack, Costume and Country. When he turned 13 I decided to turn him into a western horse because of the high head and knee action required. He manages to obtain numerous top 5's in Western and Trail.
This horse had a story behind him. Was bought in an aution in Arizona when he was two months, for $35.00. His mother when to a different home and he was seperated that day from her. He went to Alberta and lived with warmbloods for two year. I then bought him from his first owner when he was two. He was wild and untrained. I watched him perform a really nice trot on the spot while being tied up to a post. I trained him and showed him to his "Legion of Honor Award". This was a big challenge for me. Working full time and going to school. It payed off in the long run. It sure felt good beating other horses in the ring that I knew cost $30,000. or more. He was shown in the "Calgary Stampede Parade" (in costume) "Spruce Meadows" demos of the breeds and did a course with the Calgary City Police Service. At the "Calgary City Police" mounted unti location. I took him off the trailer I could hear other say "oh it is an arab". Well he turned out to be first in his class. For the final exam we had to go down a shoot with 6 officers throwing footballs, flares, flags and noise makers. There was a bridge he had to cross with a dummy rocking in a chair beside it. Motor bikes with light and sirens on, dogs on leashes barking and a 8 foot ball (looked like a beach ball) he had to push with his chest.
I retired him at age 18 and sold him back to his original owner for the same price. He will be turning 22 this year.

Dollar is a 10-yr old Criollo that I was abused in Cancun. He was obviously trained in English and jumping, but the stables he was at used him for chorro and racing; using physical punishment for failure. He became so temperamental that no rider could stay on him. He was like a bucking bronco. I took him to a tranquil stable where we re-trained him for english and jumping. Most importantly, we gave him love, comfort, security, and loyalty. Now he is a happy guy and everyone stays on him. He even helps with my volunteer group for autism children and will calmly walk with a 10-month old autistic child on his back. What a little bit of love and tender care can do to turn a bucking bronco into a gentle gelding.

Chino is my 10 year old OTTB whom I absolutely LOVE. At his old barn, his mouth has been so roughed up that he'd freak when anyone picked up the reins. He was also under weight. But, with 150 pounds, and loads of TLC, he's gotten much better, and is now a complete puppy.

Navara was a nervous and inverted horse, who was bullied by other horses and extremely cautious and nervy around people. She had a past of misbehaving, throwing riders, rearing and generally being a nightmare, she was put out to pasture because of her behaviour and resorted back to being semi-wild. I had to start from the very beggining teaching her to be caught, have her feet picked, and even tying up. I took her on in November, and she is a changed horse.

Hi! We adopted one of our TB's from FFI, Friends of Ferdinand. Cheers is a retired racehorse. FFI purchased him off the track, at an end of season paddock sale. If FFI had not purchased him, he would have been sold to a kill buyer. Cheers has a forever home with our family :-)

My second chance horse is my horse, Chance. Orginal name, I know. He was a PMU baby, destined for slaughter. He's been in the family for 10 years and hos done everything.

I have a new project benefiting rescue horses I am calling Save A Face As an equine and animal portrait I wanted to bring awareness to horse slaughter or other horse related abuses/ causes by putting a face to the cause. I paint a 'face' and offer it for sale thru E-bay's Giving Works program with 50% of the proceeds going to the designated rescue- most often the one the animal was helped by.
