"I, too have fed oil to horses, and some ground organic flax and rice bran- which is too darn expensive!- all to keep a hard-keeper endurance/trail horse in good shape. I also feed flax to all the other guys, breeding stock and pleasure horses/mules.…"

"I don't think the math is correct? A calorie is such a small unit when working out feeds we use megajoules/ kg. So, 1 calorie=4.184 joules, 1 kilocalorie= 4184 joules or 0.004 megajoules, 1 megacalorie= 4.184 megajoules . Oil has 38mj/kg of…"

"I'm not sure if she's an Azteca (not sure what the other half is), but I would wager she is half Andalusian. I train a great deal of these horses; just sent one home and got another one in. Her facial structure gives it away; she is…"

"Hi Geoffrey - The comparison is in the energy ratio. One calorie of fat (from any source) has the same energy output to your horse as 3 pounds of oats or 6 pounds of hay. It's not so much comparing apples to pears but taking a good hard look at…"

"I'm a little sceptical of the figures here April !!On an energy equivalant basis, 1 cup(250ml or 230gm) of vegatable oil contains the same amount of digestable energy as 6 cups (1.5lt or 750gm). So I don't know how that equates to…"

Horses And Oil Don't Mix

This is one of the most viewed posts from my blog, www.aprilreeveshorsetraining.wordpress.comI'm adding it because so many people are asking questions about "how to feed oil to a horse". This post is by Marijke van de Water, one of the most amazing equine nutritionists I have known. Her findings are both 'results driven' and controversial. This one in particular, goes against many of the articles you read on the web, especially the…See More

"I had a few emails from this post, regarding how to fit a young horse. If you have to fit for a horse before the age of 6, you may find that you will own 2-3 saddles, especially if the horse's training is erratic, meaning you train hard in the…"

Western Saddle Fitting and Purchasing

Posted on October 22, 2009 at 12:30pm 5 Comments

Question: How do you determine what size of Western saddle to get your horse?

Answer From April Reeves, Horseman's U.com: I will give you enough information to be able to purchase a good saddle that not only fits the horse, but fits you as well.

One thing I like to stress, when looking for a saddle, the cheaper they are the worse they fit. Cheap saddles do… Continue

I would like to know more about martingales, particularly the German Martingale

Posted on October 20, 2009 at 10:30pm 4 Comments

Question: What is a German martingale and how does it work on a horse? My horse tosses her head all the time and my friend told me to use one. Are they expensive? How much will one cost? What are other types of martingales and how do they compare?

Answer from April Reeves, Horseman's U.com: Wow, lots of questions here! The German martingale is a specialized piece of training equipment for experienced riders. It differs from other martingales as it allows lateral… Continue

Is Posting in Western Different than English? What about Diagonals?

Posted on October 20, 2009 at 10:30pm 0 Comments

Question: I am just learning to ride western. I have been riding english for 5 years. Will I need to learn how to post all over again? Is there a difference? I don’t want to look stupid. And how do I get diagonals?

Answer from April Reeves, Horseman's U.com: Posting the trot in Western is the same as English. Remember, horses cannot distinguish the difference in disciplines, only humans do. The movements of a single horse are the same regardless of a Western or English… Continue
