Friendship and Communication with your Horse

Barefoot and Bridle-less

I feel strongly about this topic as I have a herd of fourteen warmbloods that have lived without bits and shoes. They are as God made them, living on 320 acres, of meadows, hills and rocky terrain,…

ONE WITH THE HERD - A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY

I just joined a few days ago. I live with my herd of 16 horses and one steer in the interior grasslands of BC. I moved from Gibsons over ten years ago because I was

led to follow my hearts desire and move my animals to a place where

they could have the freedom of a wild herd. We live on 320 acres of

forests, hills and meadows, pristine land that fills me with joy and

new discovery even ten years later. Living in seclusion from the…

I always have treats when i ask my horses to play -just like asking your friend to come over for tea and cookies... animals best reward is food. I don't let them get pushy, but teach them to be gentle and wait until I give it. A good way to treat is to ask them to whoa and then treat, back, and then treat etc. -then they learn whoa is a good thing to do as well. Prima, the big dark bay I'm riding in the video, will gallop in the hills and the minute I ask whoa she skreeches to a stop and flips her head around looking for her reward. Works like a charm!

I love that video "one with the herd"! That is just like the stuff I want to be able to do with my horse. My horse loves me but she would much rather walk away from me if I tried to do any of that stuff with her, then follow me. But I have been getting her to follow me after I finish riding her. So I guess we are improving =)
