I am just not used to the cold. I moved to AZ an now I am back in the frozen tundra in WI, It was 80 in AZ yesterday and -4 here this morning. I just do not seem to own enough warm clothes for this climate. I want my warm bed back. I am here helping my daughter watching the grand kids while she is doing some leadership training for the Army. Wishing it was summer here. I am very cold this morning. Need more clothes on. Burrrrrrrrrrrr

Hi, Roberta!

Today it's warmed up to -1, which feels wonderful compared to the -6 I was riding in yesterday, and positively fabulous compared to the -20 we had on Monday! We're supposed to be having an El Nino witner this year, with not too much snow (so far, so good) and much warmer temperatures than normal. That part's mostly true, in that we didn't get real snow until a week ago, and apart from a 10 day cold snap it's been above 0 during November and December thus far. I'm hauling hay this afternoon as it won't be bitterly cold (it's not a fun job at the best of times, at and -25 or -30 it's truly nasty), and then I can relax through Christmas.

I ride in Mountain Horse Ice High Rider boots, Kerrits Sit Tight 'n' Warm breeches, Greenhawk microfibre fleece lined gloves, and an ear warmer under my helmet. I wear undershirts, turtlenecks, a heavy fleece vest, and a riding jacket on top of all of it. After my warm up I ditch the jacket and stay warm until I'm cooling out. My horses wear polar fleece keyhole quarter sheets, and they have no hair as I keep them under lights. I do have two radiant heaters in my grooming area, which make a big difference to my comfort (and my horses'!) while I groom and tack up and untack etc. My barn's insulated but relies on horse generated heat to stay at about -5 regardless of the outside temps, but my arena is open on three sides (we don't get much wind), so we ride in the outside temperature, whatever that is...

I really prefer to ride in heat, which is a good thing, as we get lots of that in the summers here!
