3 TIPS FOR TAKING THE DRAMA OUT OF MONEY

Money is such a big source of drama for people, businesses and organizations these days. Webster’s defines this use of the word ‘drama’ as an “intense conflict of forces”. I see a whole range of emotions and states in my clients: fear, angst, worry, depression, dread, sadness, overwhelm and panic. It goes on and on. It is not fun to be them. If you are experiencing any of these same emotions, then these three tips for taking the drama out of money is for you!

Get Completely Real About How Much Money You Have Each and Every Day. I am amazed at the number of people I work with that resist looking at their money. In their minds it could only be ‘bad news.’ Looking at their money is something to avoid like the plague. But it is not bad news. Looking at your money is information. It is not judgment. Here is the action to take: Look at your bank balances and reconcile your accounts daily. Make friends with the numbers.

Replace worrying about money with taking action. Train yourself to turn any negative emotion into effective action. It doesn’t matter if it is a baby-step action or a giant-step action. Take action. Move forward. Feeling fear, anger or overwhelm? Balance your checkbook, check your credit card statement, see if you have enough money to cover your bills, sell something on E-Bay, ask for a raise, file papers, eliminate one way your spend money that doesn’t truly support you. Just take one action. You will be amazed at the difference this will make in a very short amount of time.

Get crystal clear about how much money you need to live on each month. Know your “Living Debt Free Budget”. Be clear about what the choices in your life and life style truly cost. Approach this exercise with curiosity and an open mind. Where does the money go? Is this what I really want? Oh, look how much I should have left over! Or, this is the amount of money I need to generate to have the lifestyle I really want. Uncover your spending habits by going through the past 3 months of bank and credit card statements. Create a budget and keep it current. Let it support you.
