Hey Horse Lovers: I know I risk sounding like a grouch (!) but holy cow, please keep a rein on your kids when they are at the barn, especially if you have gone off to ride and they have snuck back to run pellmell around the slippery aisles and in and out the doors, spooking the horses in their stalls and risking life and limb near those out on cross-ties. I get that children are high energy but maybe you could have them play near where you are riding so you can see what they are doing. Or bring the significant other or grandmom or enlist the services of a kind co-boarder. We have all heard horror stories of kids being badly hurt. Instinctively, they know what they are doing is verboten, but they are kids.....I might have been a wuss, but my dad would have made the barn off limits if I had run around half crazed as a child. Horses deserve respect for a whole multitude of reasons; it’s not just that they are big and unpredictable and downright lethal at times, it’s because they deserve to be relaxed in their stalls where they trust that they are safe and not subjected to screeching and running small beings. Enough for now.

I raised my kids around horses.  If the kids live in a city or suburb a horse farm represents a place where they can run for a long distance, often screaming with glee every step of the way.  Jumping on hay piles/bales, climbing fences, and swinging from stall doors also provide fun.

A horse person HAS TO keep an eye on kids!!!!!
