hi everyone i am new. This morning i went to see my horses and came across something very upsetting, someone has trespassed on the property where my horses are boarded and have crudely chopped my chestnuts flaxen mane and his forelock. I have been to the police and have a file number but this is very hard to find the viloent offender. It is punishable by law,Mischief/trespassing. So my horses are near the Herd Road area in Cowichan Valley. So beware that there are predators out there.Should anyone ever hear a lead that will contribute to the arrest of a person(s) there is a reward in it.

Geoffrey had a very good point . I would feel so violated if this were to happen, no matter what the reason the perp had. I am glad I have 2 dogs "on duty", altho they sleep in the house, they can hear a raccoon wink outside, lol. Barb, I am sooo sorry this happened to you and your horse, and hope you can solve the mystery. I am thankful your horse wasn't hurt.

Yes Nora..that is what i have said, i am so glad that he didnt flinch or get silly because he really could have been hurt.
I can honestly understand now when a person has had their house has been broken into and they say they feel so violated, yesterday when i evened out his mane i washed him down, heavy brushing and then fly spray. Unfortunately they cut off his forelock as well so that could not be evened out.
Thank you for your words and support!!!

there have been a few cases like this around our area, and up the island. Although it is very traumatic, I think that the majority of people tend to believe that the manes and tails are being taken for native art and ceremonial masks. Fortunately, in these most recent cases, there has be no other injuries/transgressions towards the horses or properties. If this is indeed the case.....It would be so much better if horse owners were contacted and asked to "store" away some mane and tail hairs, over a period of time, and then whoever is wanting it that bad, could come and pick it up. With all the horses in our area, it would take long to have as much hair as needed........but, maybe there is some "ritual" factor involved?

I always feel very sad for the horses and owners when this happens, but also relieved that no other injury occured. Hope this mystery will be solved for you soon.

so sorry to hear about your horses Barb, I agree with Geoffrey, animal abusers generally do not have any respect for life, animal or human. I hope they catch these offenders.

You know all serial killers started with abuse to animals !!!! The courts should make the offenders work in an animal shelter or stable complex to try and educate these people. I don't think it does much good to lock them up. It's better to try and give them an opportunity to develop an affinity with animals. Make them work with the Mounties.

Hi Barb, I am so sorry for your trouble. I don't know what area you are referring to (is it in the USA?), but I hope that the people responsible for this are caught and punished. I do know that, as tough as it is, you will have to stay "on top" of this all the way through, and KEEP reminding your local police that this IS a crime, and that they can't give up, because you will not give up....and if they do catch the person/people responsible, you will have to work very hard (and probably argue the case over and over) to win the prosecutors' willingness to even bring this to trial. I hate to say it, but it is an uphill battle all the way. I wish you luck.
