Well I was just wondering if there is any particular breed of horse/pony that is best for begginer riders to own, because my parents talk about getting me a horse sometime after I'v had some more riding lessons, but I was just wondering what breed would be best if there is a best breed for begginer riders/ owners. And how many hands high is best for a 12 year old? And are geldings better for a first horse then mares, cuz mares can get grumpy. lol =D

lol yeah mares can be very moody, I ride a mare at my riding lessons, so far she hasn't been grumpy. There's 2 welsh ponies down the road from me, but both to short for me, but I love them cuz there soooo cute!

Haflingers . . . my 12 year old sister competes in mini events and pony club rallies with her haflinger mare

but it all depends on the horse's temperament and experience

I recommed getting an older, "been there, done that" horse over the breed! A horse in his or her teen years that has the experience is the best mount for a beginner. Usually Quarter Horses or draft crosses but a good experienced horse can be any breed. I would advise you to stay away from young Thoroughbreds, especially one off the track. As our local pony club District Commissioner, I receive many calls from parents who for what ever reason bought OTTB's for their beginner child and are discovering that their child cannot ride the horse. I think because they can usually pick one up at a bargain price, plus the glamour of owning a TB is why they buy them. But if you have to pay someone to ride and show the horse, what good is that? As for size, that depends on how tall you are. If you are tall, look at getting a small horse, in the 15 hand range. It also depends on what your choice of riding is. For example, in eventing, size is not as important as if you were doing hunters. Mare or gelding? That is a personal choice. Geldings are more steady, mares can be grumpy, but I have learned that mares are very loyal and 20 years after vowing to never own a mare again, I love the mares I have and would not hesitate to buy another one. Remember to get any horse you are considering vettted out and I advise taking someone experienced along with you when horse shopping! There are unfortunately, a lot of scammers in the horse world. I also suggest you join your local USPC chapter for valuable experience!
