Every horse person has heard of Wellington. Most of the bigger Canadian stables have a secondary location here where their riders show and compete during winter. It's also known to attract some big names towards their shows and tournaments and boasts a wide equine culture with its various equine and polo events. So what exactly is it that makes Wellington such a hotspot for equestrians and their horses?

Location

Wellington maintains a warm climate all year long which allows it to hold outdoor events and shows all year long. It's also nearby to other major Florida city which allows easy accessibility in terms of transportation and shipping. Money Magazine named it the one of the 100 best places to live for its relaxed and friendly environment. After all, when you’re warm, what’s there to worry about?

Economy and Jobs

The average household income of Wellington is above the national average; but that's probably helpful since horseback riding is an expensive endeavor. Also since there are lots of stables, there are lots of jobs. Grooms, barn managers, veterinarians, farriers and riders are all needed to make a successful show barn run smoothly. Then there are the people who run the actual shows and tournaments; grounds keepers, announcers, judges, course designers, the lists go on. And as we all know; good jobs= good economy.

Equine Events

Wellington has a fairly large polo community. It also plays host to several well attended horse shows and festivals such as the Wellington Horse Show and the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF). The WEF especially is a big one since it offers what’s hard find anywhere else in North America; seven weeks of continuous equestrian events held throughout winter. It draws around 5,000 horses and 2,800 riders every year. Since most of the U.S. and all of Canada cannot compete as much due to snow, Wellington is a huge attraction to the avid competitor who wants to show year round.

So if winter comes and you find yourself, shovel in hand and various fluids running down your face from the cold, consider taking a break and heading to Wellington for a week or two during the winter. Guaranteed there’s something you’ll enjoy whether it’s a polo game, the Budweiser Clydesdales or simply an idle day on the beach. Either way you’ll get out of the cold and work up a nice tan…or burn. Just be sure to use sunscreen either way!
