good to hear your felling beter=] nah i dont play tag with casper its to scarry..............and he gets quite full of himself at times!he has actelly been verrry naughty latley he was chasing the turkeys around the other day. he almost stompded them into the ground! grace is good she is so quite she dosent really get up to much she just eats and watches casper, somtimes shell help him charge at things and they work together. like the other week when my sister came down to vist her and her bofriend were in the car driving when casper(not knowing who they were) charged for them they just ignored him but when the had to drive out of the paddock and close the gate he wouldent let them. and if he wasent watching and they were about to get past grace would stomp her feet! i havent been riding casper all to much. but the other day i was riding him bareback he is sooooo huge (lol i got on him after riding the pony) we were troting around (he has quite a nice trot bareback feels like your floating) and we cantered a little the dog was runing around with us witch is ok. but candy(the dog) tends to weave around every were and runs out in front of you alot whitch can be quite anoying. anyway casper was standing and candy laied at his feet like right on him. ajd i didint notice and when i got casper to walk on he treaded on her! but she was fine she yelped but she was happy in a few minnets. she even got her toy and threw it at casper feet for him to throw! dad had a massive bomb fire going so me and casper rode around it like indians. whitch was pretty funny!(casper looves fire!hes so un horse like. every time we have a fire we have to lock him up or hold him coz he tends to want to get in the fire!)
party time is going good i have been riding her alot! we went on a trail ride the other day and i tracked down some kangeroos. a whole mob around 12. then we rode through some scrub and came acroos a owl on the ground hunting he was a big gray. we were like 10cm away from him. but he flew away. ive been schooling party time a little and her translations are really smooth as a result. ive also been jumping on her........witch remindes me. we now have a new saddle well not new but new to us. it is a english saddle(i was riding in a stocky before) and she now looks like a hippy horse! its really bright and has every coulour u can amagin!
well i am gonna put up some more photos so check em out!!!

Hi Shirley! I'm doing okay. The summer has been too cool for swimming but nice enough to be outside lots. I'm doing more riding this summer and loving it. How are you doing?

Hi Shirley, Thank you for your kind words, we do what we can. I'm always happy to help others as I've had so much help from many people over the years. I like to think in some small way I'm putting something back. Cheers Geoffrey

I have been fighting headaches, and body aches :( Since I cut back to one riding lesson a week I have been gaining weight. The lessons moved to outdoors for the summer and have missed a few due to rain already also. Sometimes I wish I would have gotten an older trained horse to ride now, but I wouldn't give Cooper up for anything, I love him and I think he likes me too LOL

Hi! Wow! I'm very green about barn mice and didn't even know you'd posted anything for me until today - how sad is that??
Wheels is a HUGE character. I call him my big weiner - because he so is. He's a handful though. We're going through a rough spot right now and I'm actually thinking I might have to sell him...he's a big athletic boy who can intimidate me when he wants too... :( We're going to start with having a training ride him for me for a bit though because I really don't want to sell him.
My favorite story about him - oh man! There are so many! But I'd say one of my all times is his "olympic swimmer move" while free lunging. He will gallop as fast as he can down the long side of our arena and then drop his left should and buck around in a circle - pivoting on the one front leg - and then land and gallop off in the other direction as fast as he can. It totally looks like the equine version of the move swimmers do. Its fun to watch on the ground but if he ever tried it while I was riding...... ?!

Hi Shirley,
Yes the Haflingers are special. My gelding, Wesley, did the therapeutic riding gig for 2 winters in Victoria and was well loved. He and his dam, Ilsa, are who keep me sane! Oh, along with the geriatric Morgan, Felina, and the two mini donkeys, Ian and Lily.....

....Hi Shirley....you posted on Barney the Blacksmith about the Rider's Rasp......I ordered and just received My one yesterday. Now the ground is getting dried out and hard ( southern Ontario) my unshod feet get very ragged between trimmings. Tried it on my guys yesterday....LOVE IT !!!!

I would suggest using it 2 or 3 times a week as part of your "pick out" routine. It's a bit pricey.....but I feel...well worth it. I'm sure it will stop small cracks and flares from becoming a much bigger problem between trims.

Hi Shirley,

I hope you're feeling better. A cold in the summer is so annoying. It's bad enough in winter when you don'treally want to go anywhere but when the weather's nice and your stuck at home..awful!

How is your friend Cash? Did you have a chance to ride since your last post? I'm sure he misses you and you he.

There are lots of nice horses in your pictures, are they the ones you are helping out with? How are you doing with the gang? I should also assume though that you haven't really had a chance to work with them because your feeling under the weather.

The pictures of the vineyard are beautiful!!!! Did you ever keep your horses there? Do you go often to visit? It looks like such a relaxing place. What kind of grapes do they grow? In Canada there are places that also produce their own wines but I've never actually visited or done a wine tasting trip....yet. It actually sounds like a great idea for a long weekend.

I'm also sick..I have something called horse withdrawal sickness. This is the first week of the next 8 weeks when I will only be riding once a week. We have guests coming in from over seas. I will instead be playing tourguide. I am very happy they are coming to visit but I am already missing horseback riding and I haven't even missed a training yet. I know this sounds awful but I find riding is like therapy for me. Even just being around the horses has an effect on my psyche. I am still working on my issues but I just love to be around them.

Well I hope you get well soon and can't wait to hear from you!

hi
casper personallty is a bit strange....... he will follow you around all day long never geting tiered, if he saw a stranger walking up the road he charges for them, hes always in your face. he knows how to open most gates, and usally comes in and nocks on the back door! he is verrry intelligent and works stuff quickly, he is really cheeky. but he is also verry loving........at times. he is a lot of fun.
somtimes my dad gets out there wit casper in the paddock and they play a game a bit like 'tag". dad runs up to casper stops his feet runs back as far as he can then casper runs up to dad stomps his feet. its quite fun to watch but somtimes casper starts pigrooting becoz he gets so excicted.
our logenst hollidays over here would be the christmas hollidays witch are 2months. we usally go camping/ fishing exploring just stuff like that. or i go with dad in the truck for a week as he is a truck driver[=]

hello
when i started to working on her in the padock jhon noticed that she wasent bending propley to my leg aids on corners so he got me to apply a litle more when i was turning corners or when she was trying to go somwere i didint want her to. we did serpantines walking for a bit then trot then canter i took her over some trot poles and figer of 8's. i found it helped her a lotand she is more willing to ride. i've only ridden her around six times and she is a extremly forward moving and wants to go go go! but she is sooooooooo much fun and i looooove her soooo much[=]
but she is for sale, we were going to by her but she is only 13hh so i would outgrow her to fast. but its like i own her anyway im the only person who rides her ect. but im happy just ridding her for now[;]

hey
thats a beatful photo u posted on my profile is that were you live?
ill have some of my photos up in the next day or so. yay!!!!
on the weekend i rode my friends horse again(i dont know if ill ride casper anytime soon he played up so bad last time i did!!) i was going to go for another trail at the river but as we got down there her paddock mate witch is paddoced down there was calling out and galloping around. hence party time did not wamnt to go on so i had to go back up to johns(her owner)and have a litle schooling session with her. the next day i rode her up the back ally way (its quite nice its about 300m) and she was calling out for her friend the whole time and once she relised she wasent going to see him she refused but i did some of the stuff what john told me to do when she acts the way she dose and she responded stright away. i took her up to my farm and i just jumped and did barrels and rode around the paddock witch she was happy doing. when casper saw her he was running up and down the fence line wanting to fight her! but she was fine. when i took her back i thought i saw one of my old friends so i was yelling out to her as i walked home hence it turned out it wasent even her!!! it was sooooooooooo embarrising!! ha ha ha ha
well i hope you are felling beter soon!!

Hi Shirley: Sorry for the late response but have been away. I have a farrier friend who has used this trimmer and he say it does a fine job. Since I have oftern shown may clients how the use an old rasp to remove chips between trims I dont object in the least. As for topical dressings I have 2 faves. As a hardener I like Tuff Stuff. As a general restorative there is nothing on the market better than Fiskes Hoof and Hide Balm. Hope that helps a bit. Be well, Barney

Shirley I missed hearing from you!!!

I am glad that Demi has settled in even if it has been a bit of a rollercoaster. I am sure her owner is happy to have someone like you helping her out with all her horses. Did you do any ground work with her horses yet? I was just curious, Is she the only one who rides in her family? Four horses seems like a lot for one person. I hope she gets well soon so she can enjoy them.

How did the "spreading of the wings" go? Did you ride around the near the outdoor arena? Hopefully there were no new cows at the neighbours! It's always a bit scary because you don't know what is out there but when it goes well there is nothing like the feeling of you your horse.

I also wanted to ask you what is a one rein stop? I have never heard of the term. Maybe I know what it is but I don't what the name is.

Yes I did paticipate in a clinic! I rode with Frank Grelo. Have you ever heard of him? I hadn't until this clinic and then i googled him. I wasn't sure if it would be worth it for me to actuallly ride in the clinic because I am so new to Dressage and I didn't want to waste his time and/or embarass myself. Amanda had mentioned that she had ridden with him in one of her posts and I asked her if she thought I should do it. And she did. So I did. Wow what an experience! I had spoken to others who had participated in the two days before and they all told me that it was great learning experience and it was all done on the walk. Imagine my surprise when more than half of my training was done on the canter!!!! Mr. Grelo asked me what I wanted to work on and I told him that half of my lessons where in class with another rider and it had become very apparent that I did not use my aids effectively enough to control the direction of my horse. He really likes to ram up the other horses butt!!! so for a little bit we worked on direction and control. And then he decided we would canter and I would not use my reins and he would control the situation. Scary!!!!!! I think he did this so I could get a better seat. Since I had that stumble I am very scared as my big fella often trips. I was so so scared that Mr. Grelo told me that I was spookier than any of the horses and that there was no wolf out to get me. Mr. Big didn't help the situation either when he decided he would buck when I asked for left canter. Mr. Grelo was just such a great trainer. He kept pushing me to continue on the left even after the bucking. He kept me laughing throughout our session and I felt much better afterwards about my riding. I left there knowing I didn't have to be so scared and even if Mr. Big bucks I have the strength and the know-how to stay on. Also by using the canter to work on my seat I felt a HUGE difference. I've only cantered a little bit in lessons. This was very different. I found out today he will be doing another clinic in October and I would not miss it for the world!

By the way Shirley, I am happy you have added some pictures so we can see you and your handsome boy. Keep me posted on your work with Cash.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Oh for the days when I can go for a hack with Cooper LOL, mine would just be around the outdoor arena, no where to hack where I board. I am thinking I will try to go further north to someplace that has acres for hacking, but then it will farther for me to drive again.
I wondered too if there are toxic weeds in Cooper's paddock. In the last few months Cooper has gotten ill, almost colicky, a few of his buddies in the paddock have around same times too. This is his first spring summer season at this barn. The barn manager gave him something for the pain the second time and walked him around the indoor arena. This was new to me and it really is scary!! Vet said it is the time of year, with the grass growing. I was thinking maybe sand colic, since there is no grass in his paddock, but there are weeds around in spots.
I made it to the barn to see Cooper on his birthday. He really seemed happy to see us. He got a bucket of yummy treats and a good grooming. He is getting bum high again and his chest is starting to fill out. I'm thinking he just might actually hit 15 hands, have to get a stick to measure him again.
That sounds like a great book, I will have to look it up.
Well, back to work, it's 1:58 p.m. here in Toronto and pouring rain outside LOL
