Austin, TX Police Department Mounted Division
Formed in the 1980s, the APD Mounted Division represents a dying breed. In the last decade, mounted units have declined over 50%. Their utility in the city's downtown entertainment district is immeasurable, and they serve as ambassadors to the public. The bond they develop with their steeds may seem counter to the perception of the unit as rigid and militaristic. They think of their horses as 1200 lb partners in every sense.
