I mostly experiment with energy and body language in my quest for a bond with my horses.... I also try and see if what I am doing leaves them MORE relaxed when we are done.... in my quest for knowledge I learned about endorphine release and how to make my horses "high" on me so that they will want to be with me the next time..... anyway, I go for attitude not performance.... and try and see if I can reward the slightest try... see how I'm doing here..... everything is an experiment... I'm just trying things, then I go back and watch to see how much of a flubber I am.... but maybe you guys will enjoy these.. and good luck on your connecting with your horses!!

My horse, Toby, my LOVE..... and first horse is more shy than Oliver.. you can see it in his stance.. he doesn't come up to me as much..... if you notice, it is his tendency to walk backwards.... he used to do this with me on the trails when he didn't want to go forward, he would back right off the side.... so, I quit riding him and tried to work on his confidence.... in this video, again, practicing..... never for performance but for attitude I want to see what it takes for me to get him to understand my body movement for walking forward.... so we are trying it here...... in future weeks I have been able to do this exercise with him and then push him up into a cute little trot.... but I was mostly trying inside turns here (what they say is a trust exercise) because he usually wants to turn to the outside... once he got the hang of it, I took the pressure off of him and let him look at me and quit... this helps him relax... is he not cute? He's 28 years old....I got him when he was 22... and he was so unsure of himself.... he also did NOT look at me meghan or even want me near him for at least a year....
here is me and O man..... if you notice he licks and chews right when he sees me.... he is interested in what we are going to do because we work in little short lessons.... here I am going to see if my energy is right and my body language right to start to push him into a trot, which I've never felt safe having him trot by me before but I want to do, working on disengaging his hip which he used to block with his head and neck and not let me get to, turn him around by catching his eyes when I am behind him, and let's see what else am I doing, oh, showing him that I can push him out away from me and he's okay... so we can start lunging more and stuff..... this video is 2 months after the first one below.... from following me like he did in the below video I wanted to show him that it was okay to be out there away from me, from a physical perspective, i am practicing shoulders in and out... because Oliver is a forward horse and his head, neck and shoulders need to be controlled.. he uses them to defend himself.. ...... and I'm also for one of my first times experimenting with a clicker..... in these videos I am forever trying to see what motivates him.... now this horse, just 18 months ago was stuck and would not move his feet and we had no forward motion... also, believe it or not he loves the "woohoo" and gets real excited when I praise him with my voice.... but I'm also practicing shutting up and not being so busy within my own self.... so Oliver and I can dance eventually..... this is my energy work... let's see what you guys think...
Video one...... catching my horse...... and then practicing seeing if I can get him to follow, drawing him in to go over his log, pushing him away when he gets to close and practing myself being calm, not over bearing and making sure I don't confuse him, and slowing down when it starts to get messy.... all my time with my horse to me is practice.... I'm sure I made mistakes, but he is much LESS confused than he used to be.... I guess my purpose is to show that horses can understand with EASY pressure...... I have a theory that you can stay real gentle and still get the point across so I wanted to see if it would work and I was showing my "relationship" work to my trainer, Steve... :) If you see Oliver go to his bucket looking for food, it is because when we first started working together, we went from bucket to bucket and I would put his reward inside he bucket.... aw, Oliver.... he is so sweet...

My rope here is to create energy and direction.... some people don't use this method.... in future videos I went to a long whip....
