Hi All,
I just had my appendix out on the weekend and was told I couldn't ride for six weeks! :( That seems like too long to me! Has anyone else been through anything similar? How long before you were back in the saddle?
Thanks!

I rode 3 weeks after mine (my mother was not home at the time. Yes it was a long time ago) back then it was not done with key hole surgery. I was told not to drive for 6 weeks after my caesarian, but due to the fact that I had a very premature baby still in hospital, I was driving a week later. You should do what you feel you are able to do. I guess if you can do a sit up, you can ride.
Hi Barbara, That's bad luck getting a crook appendix ! I've still got mine so I can't be much help. Kate , my wife, is a nurse and she said after a couple of weeks if you feel fine go for it ! But start slow and if it hurts stop. Hope you recover soon . Cheers Geoffrey
Thanks Rebecca and Geoffrey!

Well tomorrow is the end of week one, and I already have cabin fever! I think tomorrow I'll attempt a walk around the very snowy block.

I visit the doctor in the third week of March and I think she'll let me get on and do a bit of light riding, even though it will only be 4 weeks.

Hope all is great with both of you!
Hey Barbara,

Not an Apendectomy but a Hysterectomy....and I rode way too soon and paid for it. So, do as doctor says or you will be sorry! LOL. Unfortunately, hard as it is to wait, doctor knows best.
I rode 6 weeks after my c-section. I had no tummy muscles. Be smart and listen to your doctor. Let yourself heal properly for the amount of time the doctor says. Your horse will still be there. I spent my time out of the saddle really cleaning up all my tack etc. and groomed my horse 'til the cows came home!
Hi Barb,
I just had my appendix taken out on Friday ! The doctors told me that I cannot ride for minimum 3 weeks, and I should be fully recovered in 6 weeks. Are you riding yet ?
Oh no Sue, I'm sorry to hear that!

I had mine out just over three weeks ago (also on a Friday). I was told not to ride for six weeks due to the risk of scar tissue or hernia, so I am going to the barn and watching my coaches ride my horse. :(

I'm feeling well enough to get on and do something light, but I'm terrified of causing any sort of complication. I'm going for my four week check up on Friday so I'll let you know what the surgeon says. How are you feeling? Are you on painkillers? I had a tiny bit of Morphine just after the surgery, then twice I took Tylenol 3 on the following day, but then I went to extra strength Tylenol because I want to be off the heavier stuff. I wasn't in bad pain at all, but I did have to walk around holding my stomach because it felt like everything was going to fall forward. I had mine done at Mount Sinai in Toronto. Where did you have yours done? Did you have it done laproscopically?
I had the old fashioned kind of surgery, as it was an emergency so I have a keyhole shaped insision. I was in Port Perry Hospital unilt Sunday and now Im home. I had some morphine after the surgery and lots of antibiotics, and they prescribed me some pain killers, but I haven't needed any. I try to get up and walk around as much as possible, coughing is the hardest thing at this point.
I have to go back on Friday for a check up, the doctor laughed at me when I asked how long before I can ride !
I know, I couldn't cough either! As they were waking me from the anesthetic, they told me to cough. Fat chance!! I made some sort of feeble sound that sounded like "he-he" and they accepted it!
