At what point to you introduce your students to the whip? Which do you more commonly tell your students to use more when a horse doesn't listen to the leg? How does the age of the horse/experience of the rider affect your decision?

Hi Richard, I don't introduce beginers to the whip until thay start to have control of the reins in stop and turn , and start to show some indepedant balence. I am very anti kicking, how can we teach them good leg position if their legs are flailing around. I get them to give the leg aid ,if the horse doesn't respond then use the leg aid again this time with the whip on the horse's shoulder, tap, tap. making sure the students leg is correctly placed. I teach my pupils a system to make sure they are getting correct placment on the horse. First, sit tall , push your hips forward by lifting your pelvis, push your knees down, lift you toes up , and squeeze with your calfs. This will , if done consistantly, give a little position check every time you ask your horse forward, fairly quickly too you will find your horse moving off as you sit tall , the lightest possible aid to go. Hope this helps oorroo ,Geoffrey
