Yes this story is heatbreaking to say the least We all know that those horses did not reach their condition over night. My question is...why were they not reported way before this. There must have beenn someone that worked there, or at least visited there or lived next door that had a an idea of what was or was not going on. Even a banker or finance person who knew that the owners or "caretakers" (using that term in the broadest of sense) that could have and should have alerted the humane society, or the sheriffs office, or whom ever that things were not good out there, and keep an eye on things. Geeesh that is the least one can do for the horses sake. It just dumbfounds me how people that have this big fantastic idea of founding a new bloodline and take the pains of finding the right stallion, and mares and importing, and advertising etc etc...can just give up, and walk away with out so much as thought for the welfare of the horses. O.K. so they lost their shirt, and can't afford another bale of hay, I can understand that, they went way over thier heads, not hard to do when you ready the website. I am sure that they were focusiong on making it big in the Arabian world and making millions from it..(I am sure that $$$ was the main issue here from the get go...visions of little $ signs dancing around them and the barn) Enough said about that..but where was their heart, and human qualities, when the chips were down and the horses were forgotten as they left the farm behind as if they were just an old wagon or piece of machinery. I don't know how any one who calls themself a man or a woman can do this to any animal. It is just not right.
That's just appalling and the puddin' stick who did it is whining about it being unfair that the horses are being seized!?!
poor babies, its bad enough that these horses are in this kind of condition but imagine it you had sent a mare there to one of the stallions only to find her in one of this condition
This is sickening. I don't know how some people sleep at night.
Hi Barbara, I don't think people like that have trouble sleaping at all, that guy doesn't see he has done anything wrong!! I read some of the comments from the article in the DentonRC and am appalled!! These type of people get into it for money , so they see the horses as production units . I mean how hard is it to clean out a stall and throw in a bit of hay?? The $4000 fine is a bit soft, and I bet he doesn't go to jail . This guy is acting like it has happeded all of a sudden, bollicks it did!! Will the law prohibite him from owning animals if convicted?
Wow. To claim that it's not fair that 76 horses in that condition are being removed from your 'care' really does take some serious denial. It is absolutely terrible that people can do this sort of thing, but when you think what humans are capable of doing to other humans, if they believe that animals are 'beneath' us, then it's no wonder ... It sounds as though all of the horses were found alive which is one small blessing. Sometimes the stupidity and selfishness of humans leaves me incredulous. No matter what the 'cashflow' situation, or the lack of time issue (rubbish), this man must have seen this coming - and so must other people. I don't know how the law in Texas operates but he should be banned from keeping animals forever - and i agree, a $4000 fine seems pretty paltry.
OMG! How did it get to this?? Someone would have to be mentally disadvantaged to let the horses get to this stage. Surely someone else saw these horses before they got so bad. How incredibly sad.
Marti I'll bet heaps of people did see this long before it got so bad, but just didnt want to get involved.
Hmmm .... people have been known to "sell" horses when they couldn't afford to keep them anymore. I know the market isn't great, right now, but I'm sure there could have been a happier ending to this story.

To me this is no different than people who have no business being parents. It's always the innocent who suffer.

I hope these horses are able to recover and that good homes are found for them.
