I agree, geld ASAP unless there is some reason not to and ASAP let in be turned out with some experienced geldings and or mares who do a much better job of teaching youngsters manners then any human can. Of course keep working with him but in my…

splash replied to Julia Slater's discussion 'Teach your horse to longe'
I just want to add a lunge whip is not always necassary. Sensitive horses can find it a bit too much. I can and do often ditch it if I find the horse reacting stressed out. The tail end of the lunge line or a lead line in place of a whip can get…

Send the horse to a professional?? I'm sure it a lot of cases this is the answer and certainly safer then having a novice try to fix the problem but Geoffrey, I concur, IF the rider is causing the problem and the "professional" fixes…

splash replied to Mary H's discussion 'How do I tame a blast-o-canter? and bucking?'
Obvious first thought is pain issues. Have him checked out by a vet. He may well be trying to tell you it hurts to canter. More likely a back issue than a hoof one but that's just MHO. Beyond that, consider where he starts the bucking…

Oh dear, your mention of the book "Brumby Dust" just caused me to have a MAJOR flashback, LOL. One doesn't have to do with the other as I've never come across "Brumby Dust". I had to google my recollection to see if I…

BOSS is sometimes helpful. Black Oil Sunflower Seeds. I've used BOSS in combo with corn oil and Hi Fat Hi Fibre and yes a TON of elbow grease to correct a similiar situation. I actually started with the elbow grease and massive amount of it,…

Hi, Splash: I just wanted to commiserate with you about the dressage forum and some of the posts thereon. I think, unfortunately, that when we try to meet dogmatic opinions with logic and rationale we are liable to be attacked, and that's what…

As you have a vet involved I'm gonna assume it's not "strangles". I gather your vet has tested for that? No advice per se. Good luck. A barn full of "not quite well" horses is a concern.

I was fortunate enough to watch Nuno ride an Andulsian stallion of his at the Potomac Horse Center in 1980. I was a working pupil at the time and sadly had no real idea of who Nuno was. What I do remember is all of us taking turns to spell each…

I third (fourth?) a running braid if you decided to show and don't wish to pull or shorten your horse's mane. Just practice, practice, practice it until you can do it neatly and it's unlikely to become undone. You may lose a point or…

The bald spot sounds like lice to me. It isn't difficult to buy louse powder and delouse them yourself, if that is indeed the problem. Horse lice is not transferable to humans so know worries there. I personally find Fiskes to be great at…

Anything by Jane Savoie. I have a few of hers. I can't remember all the titles but one was something about "Dressage for every horse/sport". She has wonderful clear explanations, great illustrations and photos.

splash replied to Geoffrey Parry's discussion 'Tripping?'
I gather he is tripping in the front? Off the top I'd think poor balance. On a trail horses are generally more concious of where they are placing their feet and in the paddock they generally don't have riders onboard messing with their…

Slc2 nailed it. I hope to build my own little barn one day to, but I'll never get my horse back. When push came to shove I had 2 other boarding options open to me (I thought). Neither had turn-out. I "felt" pushed into a corner. I…

I know where you are coming from. I used to teach at a barn with an owner just like you describe. Every new instructor was better than me, lol. I had to pick my lesson horses shit out of the arena after every lesson. No biggie except the other…

Hi, Splash:

I just wanted to commiserate with you about the dressage forum and some of the posts thereon. I think, unfortunately, that when we try to meet dogmatic opinions with logic and rationale we are liable to be attacked, and that's what happened to you. I don't ever believe that there's only one way to approach anything, the trick is to find the best spproach for any given situation, so whenever someone tells me that they are or have "the way", my antennae (and to be honest, my hackles) go up. I'm not even sure that Jean Luc Cornille espouses his beliefs to the radical extent his partner, Helyn, does, but she definitely has a patronizing and condescending attitude, and it comes across in her posts. The tone is antagonistic from the start, so I think it's a waste of time and energy to try to open her mind...
