Here is a topic that everyone can relate to, the dreadful habit of cribbing. And I have an aversion to cribbing collars that a lot of people use, as I have seen horses have swollen heads from them being adjusted too tight, and also there is risk of damage to the oesophagus. It can also create pressure in the bones of the neck, creating nerve pinches and even sometimes nerve damage. Horses can also get caught up in fences in them, and break their neck. So hence I never use…

Much alike humans, horses develope a pecking order. A pecking order tells a horse what his place is in the herd. For an example of a pecking order would be:
A new stallion just came into the little geldings padddck. He is immediatley expecting to be the alpha male but another horse has taken that spot.: This horse will either be excluded or attacked. A horse must except his place in the pecking order.…

Pic. Turn out today. Waiting to come in. "Bored now!"
Kingsley is recovering slowly from his latest trauma. I decided against riding him today just in case but the hematoma is almost fully gone from the girth area. There is still some thickening to the muscles but the vet said it might feel like that for a long time if not…

... those were the first words in a message from our barn owner... so what do I do?
That's right, I panic.
My boyfriend and I drop everything and we race to the barn. We arrive at the barn to find The Squirt looking quite unconcerned.
The Squirt:
"Munch munch. Do I really have to come in? Can't you see that I'm eating?"
*head disappears into bale*
"Munch munch."
*Wanders to other side of bale as 'Mom' approaches*
"Munch munch. I don't…

My beloved healer horse, Spring Thaw had a bit of an emergency last week/this weekend...
He started swelling on Thurs 12/17, local vet Dr. Fazio came out and found a puncture wound in the fatty pocket above the eye (don’t know name). He flushed it and gave iv antibiotics, ban-amine, and bute.
Dr. Fazio came Friday AM to check it and it was worse and pussing, he wasn’t willing to mess with it and said to get him to clinic for x-rays, etc.
Friday. 12.18.09 Spring…

Every time I get Kingsley out of his stable I hope for some miracle to happen. I hope to see him moving with no sign of discomfort, loose and supple like any healthy, sound, happy 5 year old horse would. But of course, it's not as easy as that.
After a lot of lost time with previous vets we went for a completely different Veterinary practice and Kingsley is now in hands of a back/spine focused vet.
Richard thinks Kingsley shows very classic…

How many times have you heard "what do you think of my horse's conformation?". If you know llittle about judging conformation, you likley will click the "back" button on your browser. Well that is why I am here with this blog post today!
I was NOT a conformation expert before, but I had some freinds tell me about this lady that had written books and really dug deep into the myths and facts of equine functional conformation. Her name is Judy Wardrope. She is located in the Edmonton,…

Horses come in many kinds,
And some are very hard to find.
Some are for races,
cause they ride at different paces.
Some like hay
in the day.
Some are white,
and ride at night.
Some are mean
and don't like to be seen.
Some are sweet
and like treats.
Horses come in many kind
and some are hard to find!
Look after the one you have
as not the life, height and age
will last forever....but......
The love...will always…

Hi all, I'm new to all this but wanted to share my experiences at the Sydney CDI, I went with two other NZ'rs Ottillie and Lisa, they competed small tour and we did the big tour. It was really great, I have an Irish Hunter who is NOT designed to be a
dressage horse but we did ok, we had a couple of costly mistakes in both lines of changes in both the Int II and GP tests…

Sorry to have taken so long to return to action. The virus that has plagued so many people over the last two or three weeks threatened to "take" us - as we had a good day followed by a bad day - but through it all we managed to get three horse shows and tournaments in.
The May Tournaments at Spruce Meadows were a great success as the unpredictable Alberta spring weather raised its ugly head. Evie had made a quick trip to Nelson, B.C. the week before May I and as she flew over Spruce on…

It's been a funny week, I had a small FM flare up and that is just about starting to settle down. I feel like I have been trampled by a herd of horses at the moment, which is really annoying and very painful!
My lesson went well, though I wasn't as focused as I have been the previous weeks. I think because I was in a flare, it was messing with my concentration.
Pink was so good, bless him, he had a good warm up by my instructor in the previous lesson, so I didn't have to…

I usually like to write up my blog on the day of my lesson, but I was so tired and in an awful lot of pain that day so I had to go to bed when I got home and rest up. I took a strong painkiller with my afternoon tablets and that knocked me out for a few hours. When I woke up I was still in a lot of pain and I was concerned that the FM would flare up and cause me grief. The last thing I want is a major flare up that would knock me out of the competition on 21st May. You are probably think,…

Hey Everyone,
China and i had a school at Geoff's (April) and it was HEAPS if fun.I was with Amber, Alyssa, Andrea and Laura. We did show jumping and lots of XC(Cross Country). In
Show jumping we jumped, easy stuff like cross rails and straight bars, But then we got to the slightly harder jumps. Like a water box. I think that what it's called. It's like a wooden…

The horse in this painting was patiently waiting to be lead to the show ring at the Fiesta Midwest Andalusian show. As her decorative bridle rosette ribbons twirled in the breeze, I had to wonder what was swirling through her mind.
Anyone who owns horses knows they are great thinkers. It seems mine are usually thinking, 'What's for supper" or something food related. But Sorpresa has proven to be a deep thinker and planner. Usually after…
