This is something that has always scared me. Has anyone's horse been stung by a bee while they were riding? What happened?

September 30, 2009

A woman was airlifted to hospital on Sunday after a bee swarm spooked the horse she was riding on the Pacific Crest Trail in Oregon.

Donna Tewksbury, 70, of Scappoose, Oregon, was on the trail with four other women when the accident occurred.

They became caught in the swarm and her horse fell to the ground after rearing, taking Tewksbury with it. It appears she was injured by the horse when it stood on her as it was getting up.

She suffered wrist and abdomen injuries. Two of her friends rode for help, using the cellphone of hikers they found to summon emergency personnel.

Tewksbury was airlifted to Legacy Emanuel Hospital & Health Center in Portland about 8.40pm, some five hours after the accident.

Her condition is reported to be fair.

Local police suspect one of the horses may have accidentally stepped on the hive, angering the bees.

Rescue personnel stretchered Tewksbury about 3km to the head of the trail, to allow the air lift to take place.

This is something that I have always been quite afraid of too... it's one reason to like riding in the winter. ;) It really drives home the importance of carrying a cell phone when riding.

I hope that the injured rider recovers fully, and that everyone else involved is OK.
Yes there have been many times on different trails that my horse or someone elses on the same ride has stirred up the ground wasps. Those buggers can sting and sting and not give up unlike the honey bees who can only sting once and they are done. My horses have been stung as well as me. Luckily there have always been some other riders in the group and it is not very often that there is an accident like the one described above. Now I have been trampled on like this lady after my horse went over and down...that was not fun either, but luckily I was not rushed to the hospital once I got scooped up and loaded into a truck, it was not fun and quite a while recouperating. I am still not 100 percent. But maybe I never was anyway lol
poor women I hope she'll be ok
i had the same thing happen to me years ago but not to the same extent. My horse likes water and stepped on a nest of bank wasps. He was stung twice and me twice as well. I got him stopped. I did not know that there was another wasp inside my half chaps and I got stung again wihile riding home. Not much to report but they can be bad this time of year when the weather is hot. Gail.
