Rose, in the yahoo Canadian Horse group there was a bit of a discussion recently about keeping black horses black.  There is a supplement called "Black-as-Knight" that is supposed to work well for enhancing the colour of any horse.  However, someone made a comment that it contains paprika, which will show up in a drug test...or something like that.  Someone else feeds their horse Norwegian kelp and flax seed and finds that it keeps her black horse very black (I'm assuming that means the mane too).  Another comment was that sweat will cause a black horse to fade, which I never knew before.

I recall  that there was a comment by someone that knew how to get the red out of our Canadians manes or how to prevent it. Does anyone know of that trick besides keeping then out of the Sun? Not possible!!!!  Also how to stop the tails from those dreaded Dreadlocks. Someone suggested Olive oil.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Now all I have to do is wait for it to stop RAINING so I can try your ideas. We had a great time riding Thursday while it was nice. Oh if only I had a arena. I better start buying lottery tickets LOL

Canadians are very smart and learn quickly.  sometimes they learn things inadvertently!  You have to out think them. I have bad knees so one of the first things I taught my gelding to do was to stand still especially for mounting.  He has learned that if he stands still he gets an immediate reward of a mint.Over a period of time I asked him to stand still longer and longer to earn his mint.  Now he only gets his mint occaisonally but still stands still.

Well, my horse was also like that, I don't know if this would work for you but it worked for me :)

What I did was just whistle to him as a signal to stop and then talk to him. As I'm about to get on I pull gently on the reins and let go, pull, let go, and repeat this process. As I'm on I hold him firmly but don't pull so hard it hurts his mouth and tell him "stand" in a firm but gentle voice. He used to walk off really badly and now he is almost completely out of the habit!!! =) Hope this helps... =]

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get my stubborn mare to whoa and stay whoa. She stops but then quickly steps off before I can ask her to walk on. I don't want to continually pull on her mouth and have her be tough mouthed I am useing a D ring snaffle bit. During round pen lunging she stops on a dime and stays till I ask her to walk on. Any suggestions?
